The genological library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah has an interesting book on the history of the Sowards name. As I recall the book traces the name back to the surname Tipsword/Tipswords. There is a discussion of the name being shortened to the names your looking for.
