For those of us with questions about our Southard, Southworth, etc., heritage, I have embarked upon a purely noncommercial, volunteer effort to combine genetic research with traditional genealogical methods. This project is restricted to the Southworth (or Southard, Suther, Southward, etc.) surname. Eventually, I hope to be able to answer questions like these for all of us: Are these careless spellings, or are there real distinctions among them? Is there a common place of origin? A common ancestor? Is the pedigree we as family genealogists have worked so hard to develop truly accurate?
The success of this project depends on the participation of men with the surname Southard, or similar, everywhere. The more candidates we have and the more Southworth, etc., lines represented, the more valuable the results will be for all of us. We also need proven pedigrees starting with the most recent non-living Southworth, etc., male and moving up the paternal line to the earliest ancestor of that name, or similar. I am working with FamilyTree DNA, the first and largest company doing genealogical testing.
