My Great Great Grandfather, John Fletcher WALTON served in the Third Tennessee Infantry and was captured at Black River in the Vicksburg Campaign.
The Third Tennessee (Lilliard's) Infantry (later designated the Third Tennessee Mounted Infantry) served from the earliest days of the Civil War and was President Jefferson Davis' escort when he was attempting to flee from Richmond into North Carolina.
A funny tale: The Regiments in the Provisional Army of the Confederacy were numbered in the sequence that they reported from their home states to Confederate Service in Richmond. Lilliard's would have been designated as the First Tennessee except that a train wreck delayed their arrival at Richmond until after two other Tennessee regiments reported.
