Co. A, 10th Reg't Tennessee Cavalry

My gr gr gr grandfather was a Farrier in the 10th Reg't Tennessee Cavalry. His name was John B. H.Pennell and he was from the Monroe-Polk-Blount-Bradley Counties region of Eastern Tennessee. Shortly after 1870 he moved his family to Washington Co. Arkansas and then on to the Cherokee Nation Indian Ter. where he applied for a pension in 1896. Is there a book about this reg't ? His son, William Lowry Pennell was in the Union army as a Cpl. in "D Co. 1st L-Arty". I am unfamiliar with "1st L-Arty", does that mean Company D 1st ? artillery? What does the L mean? He was injured in a train accident in Strawberry Plain TN? Is there books or websites that can tell me the exploits of these two companies?
Any help is greatly appreciated...
