Don, I don't know the answer to your question. I've been told the folks from N. Florida had sent many fathers, brothers and sons to the Confederate cause. The ones remaining were hungry and not willing to send the remainder of their families when the Confederates recruited. I've been told the Union promised them they'd move their families to Pensacola (which the Union had taken) and keep the families fed if the men would enlist. They also promised my ancestor $250 for enlisting. That was a lot of money at the time. I don't think the folks in N. Florida were originally Union sympathizers - they were just hungry. They enlisted late in the war - maybe they saw the writing on the wall. I don't know, but these are some thoughts.

The Walton County GENWEB page has some info about Walton CO folk who fought for the Union cause. This link (http://www.rootsweb.com/~flwalton/1stFLCav.txt) lists 1st FL Union Cavalry who might have had a link to Walton Co. My ancestor, William A. is there. Here's the link to the main page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~flwalton/military.htm.

Kim
