I agree with you that the South's loss was very traumatic, more so than that of the North since most of the battles took place in the South.However I would say that the Southern Unionist suffered as much or more than those who fought for the Confederacy as they faced the animosity and antagonism of the majority of the people of their state after the war, also their property had also been ravaged by the fighting.I have heard so many tales of killings and shootings that took place long after the war.There was also a lack of attention paid to roadwork projects etc. paid by the States to those counties that had a strong Union sentiment.
I have ancestors that fought on both sides during the war and I am proud of them all.My Union ancestors were with the 3rd Tennesse Mounted Infantry Regiment.Glad to find this Forum. Jim.
