I haven't done research in that area, Ishmael, but the things you described sound very familiar.Like northeast Georgia, northwest Alabama is a mountainous part of the state. The union-minded people in NW Alabama also were known as Tories.I did read that at one point, the people in NW Alabama were thinking about joining up with individuals in East Tennessee (and NE Georgia?) to form a new state by the name of Nickajack. (I'm now sure how this would have worked geographically.)
My Union-minded g-grandfather moved to NW Alabama in 1858 from Cherokee County, North Carolina, which is the near the state lines of both Tennessee and Georgia. In fact, he lived in NE Georgia for awhile and that's where he met his wife.I ran across some research that said when people migrated westward, they usually settled in areas that were similar to the places they just left.Hmmmm.
That's as far as I can go with it.Anyone else?
