John D. Mitchell

John D. Mitchell was a son of James and Melinda (South)
Mitchell of Marion County, AL. The Mitchell's came
from Laurens County, SC, to Marion County sometime
before 1840. Found among John's papers from the National
Archives was a casualty sheet which lists the following:

Name: John D. Mitchell, Private Co A, 1st AL Cav
Nature of Casualty: Death
By Whom Certified: Bat. Maj. W. T. Hartz
Date of Death: 4 August 1864
Place of Death: Andersonville, Georgia

According to papers, John was missing in action, Oct 26, 1863
at Vincents Cross Roads. Vincents Cross Roads is now known as

Red Bay, Alabama.


John is buried at the National Cemetery, Andersonville, GA.
