Hi, Louise,
Yes, I have this George W. Southern living with Gibson Southern (aka Gipson and aka Suthern) from 1850 Greenville Co, and 1860 Chick Springs, Greenville Co.George's age matches the George who married Mary Paxton. But in no instance does the census show him as born in GA.In 1870 Gibson and his family are in Catheys Creek, Transylvania County but I can't seem to find George.I suspect the indices are at fault. In 1870, Gibson Southern is indexed as "Genoa Louthane".No kidding! But the handwriting on that census is horrendous.Gibson has other children living in his household on this census, including a young man named John Southern who was born in GA.
On the 1880 census, Gibson is back in Chick Springs, Greenville County, SC to stay.In his home is his niece, Nannie is was born in GA.I know that the extended Southern family moved about SC, NC, GA and TN quite a bit so it hasn't surprised me.But when parents die, it's tough trying to match up the children when names are repeated so much.
George W. Southern turns up again in Catheys Creek with his wife Mary and children Alice and Wade on the 1880 census.
It seems almost certain that this George W. Southern is the son of Gibson and Nancy Southern.Gibson filed his will Greenville County, SC when he returned. He named George W. Southern as one of his sons. I'll include the transcription here:
