Bob,
Thanks for coming back to me. Interesting to hear that you have Southern connections in the Newark area. As you say there may very well be connections somewhere between us as one goes back in time.
Unfortunately, I have very little information on my Southern ancestors, certainly not enough to tie my lot in with yours - at least, not yet.
The only information I can add to that which I posted on the original GenForum bulletin board are a couple of addresses which were applicable to Winnie Southern (my paternal grandmother) in her younger days in Newark. These are:
Address at birth (26 March 1898):
7 Spittal Row, Northgate, Newark, Nottinghamshire, England
Address at marriage (24 December 1919):
176 North Gate, Newark, (St Leonards Parish), Nottinghamshire, England
Address at death (11 March 1931):
9 Higher Raymond Road, Redruth, Cornwall, England
Winnie Southern's future husband (my paternal grandfather) Arthur John Davey came from the west country (Fowey, Cornwall and Plymouth, Devon). I know that for part of the First World War Arthur served as a Colour Sergeant with the Royal Engineers. He was promoted rapidly and did rather well in the few short years he served.
I have photographic evidence that he spent some time with the Royal Engineers in Nottinghamshire. There are photos of him and many other soldiers on what appears to be a bridge-building exercise over, I presume, the River Trent.
I suspect that it was during this time in, or near, Newark-on-Trent that he met his future wife - Winnie Southern.
I have a post-card which Arthur sent from France in 1918 to Winnie at the 176 North Gate, Newark, (St Leonards Parish) address. I don't know the full details but they must have agreed to marry after the end of the war and he took her down to Fowey, Cornwall where they were married in his local church.
They moved to Redruth, Cornwall, started a family and this is where Winnie unfortunately died young (from cancer) at the age of 31. (Arthur re-married).
As for relatives of hers back in Nottinghamshire, I have very little idea, except those few details I put on the bulletin board last time round.
Sorry I can't help any further. However, I will bear in mind what you wrote and if I come across any information which may be of interest to you I will send it on.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
