From looking at the 1870 census, I suspect that you'll have a hard time finding out the name of the father. If the Major Southerland on the 1880 Gilmer Cty census is the same Major Southerland on the 1850 Macon Cty NC, census these sons could have been father: George and William ( born abt 1844), but the daughters have to be consider also. I couldn't find Major and family in 1860 which would have helped.

I was hoping to connect Major to the Southerlands from the Middle Georgia Area.
