This is my great-grandfather.
This is what we know or suspect:
Philip was born in about 1878, only son of Philip and Hester (van Blerk), and lived at the family home in 44 Lawson Street (even) after he married Louisa Johanna Anderson in 1900. Louisa was born in 1884 in Harrismith, South Africa. She died on 19th October 1920 aged just 36. A handwritten note on her Will by PJR states that although a Licensed Stand at 112 Bultfontein Road is listed as an asset, it was sold prior to her death to meet medical expenses during the “long illness of my wife”. Interestingly he signs these documents “J. Robinson” suggesting he doesn’t use “Philip”.
He appears in the voters lists in 1930/31 and also 1935/6 although this could be his son Phillip Benjamin.
Occupation: 1900, Digger/Driver, De Beers Diamond Mine, Kimberley, South Africa.
De Beers archive shows employment between 1905 and 1906. On 13th March 1905 he is taken on as a guard at the Bultfontein Mine Compound. He is then transferred to De Beers Floors as an overseer on 26th June 1905 and was discharged on 22nd August 1906. What happens to him after this remains something of a mystery, although we know he is not doing well.
There is an “Insolvent Liquidation and Distribution account” dated 1915 which possibly relates to this Philip Robinson. This lists all the assets of a General Dealers Store in Middelburg - every item of stock is listed and valued and then listed again as it gets sold - the document runs to many pages. The sequestration is voluntary. His assets finally grossed £837 while his liabilities were £1516, the largest being a bond of £375 with Jan Klassen [probably KAB 4/1/1057 date 1904].
He possibly appears in records relating to two other people:
A Philip Joseph Robinson is cited as the surviving spouse in two death notices.
Firstly to Jacoba Maria Botha née van den Heever who died 26 April 1945 from whom he was divorced. They had no children (it was her second marriage too). PJR would have been about 66 at the time of her death
Secondly to Dina Johanna Botha who died in 1961 [MHG 986/61] (PJR would have been 83). Dina also filed a suit for Restitution of Conjugal Rights against Philip Joseph Robinson in 1957 [WLD 1150/56]
No death record for PJR has yet been found. And this is what I'm desperately seeking! He is the only one of that generation in my tree that I have no complete dates for. I have searched NAAIRS as best I can and found nothing. I have searched several other family history sites with no joy - some even list him as still living!
Can anyone help? Please?
