Hi Peter
Thanks very much for your info. Strangely enough, there was mention in the family about a diamond miner.Unfortunately, my maternal side weren't interested in their genealogy and there is no-one alive to ask now.So sad!
My maternal grandmother (Johanna) gave me a diamond ring which had belonged to her mother. She told me it had come from a relative's diamond mine.Unfortunately, I was under school age when she gave it to me and told me the story, so all the details are now very hazy.I no longer have the ring as it was stolen when our home was broken into many years ago :-(
I have seen mention of a William Joseph Pinto on NAAIRS but I haven't asked them for a copy of his death notice, which may have mention of my g-grandmother.
The reason why I looked up a William Joseph Pinto is based entirely on my uncle's names:John Joseph and Denis William (both born the early part of 1900's)My grandmother (born in 1887)was married to an Irishman named Denis and his father's name was John.I assumed the second names came from my Gran's side of the family as there are no Williams or Josephs in the Irish family tree.
There was also talk about my g-gran being Jewish and I have seen many Pintos in Jewish Forums.Apparently the name stems from Spain when they escaped the Spanish Inquisition. There is also a famous Alexandre Alberto da Rocha da Serpa Pinto who was the Governor of Mozambique (I think??)
Good luck with your NAAIRS research, Peter, and if I uncover anything which may be of interest to you, I'll be in touch again.
Best wishes
Jo-anne
