hemps of Norfolk
I'd be glad to hear from any descendants of John Hemp (1813-1901) born in Smallburgh workhouse. His mother's name was Sarah and his father (name unknown) was press-ganged to fight in the Napoleonic wars and never came back. He was a cooper and spent most of his adult life in Great Yarmouth, England. His wife was Catherine Rendlesom; their surviving children John Christmas, Mary Ann, Thomas, Caroline, Benjamin, Emma, Sarah. We know that Benjamin (born 1852) married and had children.
Thomas (1848-1923) also lived in Yarmouth and married 1) Mary Ann George; 2) Alice Bell. The children, born between 1874 and 1899, were Laura, Rosina, Rev. William Hemp (a Methodist preacher, grandfather of my husband), Alice, Thomas (fish dealer in Fraserburgh, Scotland; his son emigrated to South Africa); Arthur, Ernest, Florence (married Bristow, Manchester); Kate (married Pilgrim, and emigrated to Los Angeles)and, by the second wife, Dorothy.
There is also another branch of the family descended from John Francis Hemp (1819-94), an agricultural labourer of Happisburgh, Norfolk, who had several children.
I'd be happy to have any further information and might be able to tell you something, too!
