Thanks again for all the information, but how certain can we be that the Johannes Barnard arriving on the Cape in 1708 was indeed a German. First of all his name is spelled the Dutch way, Johannes rather that Johann (like Sara's second husband). Second 'Keulen' is the Dutch spelling for Koln (this keyboard does not allow me to make the umlaut which should be on the 'o'). Also the names Willem and Hendrik are more Dutch than German in which language they are more likely spelled Wilhelm and Heinrich. The names Wilhelmus (Willem) and Hendrik (Henk) are also very common in the tree of the Dutch family, next to Isaac (Isaak) and nowadays a lot of modern names (see http://www.barnard.nl/stamboom/http://www.barnard.nl/stamboom/ ). Also the fact that he married a woman from Amsterdam seems to point in the direction that Johannes Barnard was from the Netherlands (Holland) rather than Germany. Could it be that he arrived from Koln, where he might have been living at the time or was just passing through, and for that reason called a German? And were the ties between the Netherlands and South Africa much stronger at the time than the ties between South Africa and Germany? Any additional information would be highly appreciated.
