Marchant - The Cape of Godd Hope
Hi
Can anyone please give me help or pointers.
My Gt Grandfather is John Joseph Marchant born 1856/57 in Cape of Good Hope (source 1891 census), I also have a letter wrote in 1924 by his brother Edward Thomas Marchant born c.1849 which states that 'John was born in Khasama Hook in The Cape Colony.' There is also another sister called 'Jinny.'
I have John in 1881 living in Manchester occupation police constable, in 1883 living in Burnley, Lancashire also a police constable, in 1891 still in Burnley but this time as an Iron Moulder. From 1901 living in Manchester at various wood moulding trades.
You would think with all this info that I could trace this family but it is proving to be very difficult, if you can offer any help I would really appreciate it, are you aware of any other Marchant families in Northern England which have a SA connection. Also are you aware of any passenger lists that may be of use.
Many thanks in advance
Joan Braund
