I have been researching my family for about 10 years and have many different variations of the family name Soule(s).
My mother was born Soules, her father went by Soules her grandfather on sources I have looked at have spelled the name SOLE(s). However, the census taker or recorder to spelled the name however he learned to read and write. Initially the TORY Soule family may have added the 'S' but that is no longer the definitive. The Soule name came over on the Mayflower, but the spelling on records can be Sole, Soul, Soules etc. etc. etc. Take your pick. I read in the Ridlon book that the families migrated after the revolution and some Soule families migrated toward Canada or places west. My greatgrandmother was supposedly born in Canada, but I have no indication that my Soule Greatgrandfather went to Canada in my research. You can also cone accross the of Soule as SOO-LAY (French pronunciation).
Always look for other spellings. As I learned with my husbands ancestery Palmatier came from Parmentier. Good luck Hunting....
