Sorrell Family Genealogy Forum

Hi Ben - Regarding Richard Sorrells of Virginia (1707-1774), I notice on the IGI there is an entry for a Richard Sorrell who was born 1 June 1620, Gt.Waltham, Essex, England, who died 1688 in Westmoreland, Virginia, USA. This Richard Sorrell is a little too early for your own Richard, but may have been his father, or grandfather.
I have been told that in the church of Gt. Waltham, Essex, England, there is a tomb of a Richard and Elizabeth Sorrell of Hyde Hall, near Great Waltham, who died over three hundred years ago leaving the house to a local doctor. This suggests that they had no children or family to leave it to, yet records show that there were many related households in the area called Sorrell. In the 1950s Hyde Hall was up for sale, the previous owner being a son of a former British Prime Minister, Ramsey Macdonald. It passed through several owners and at one stage was owned by the British pop star, Suzie Quatro, for about 7 years. The house had the reputation of being evil, especially towards children. A child once drowned there. She eventually called upon the local vicar to exorcise the house. The ghost was allegedly that of Richard Sorrell! I have no idea if the exorcism was successful.
Best wishes, Maggie
