--- 3rd Generation ---
4.James Jr3 Sorrell.James Jr was born circa 1768.
James Jr married Mary McDonald on 20 Oct 1798 in Amherst County, VA.
James appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Amherst County, VA, in 1799.He appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Amherst County, VA, in 1802. James evidently left Amherst County, VA shortly after 1802. We are not sure where he went as there is no trace of him until he appears in Kentucky in 1809. His brother, Elisha, left Amherst at about this time and moved to Greenbriar County, VA (now WV) until c1810. However there is no record of James in Greenbriar that we have been able to find. The widow of James' son John, said in a pension application that she filed for John's Civil War service that he was born in Culpeper County, VA. in 1806. If so, James' had moved back to Culpeper between 1802 and 1809. I am skeptical of either record or lack thereof and believe that the better chance is that he went with his brother Elisha to Greenbriar. They had lived together in Culpeper, Amherst and wound up in Kentucky at about the same time. I see no reason except lack of any record to believe they didn't go together to Greenbriar together also.
James appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Fleming County, KY, in 1809.He, age 26-45, appeared as head of household on the 1810 US census of Fleming County, KY. Listed also: others not named. He appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Fleming County, KY, in 1811.He appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Bath County, KY, in 1811. James had moved from Fleming County, KY in this year. He, age 26-45, appeared as head of household on the 1820 US census of Bath County, KY. Listed also: others not named. He, age 50-60, appeared as head of household on the 1830 US census of Bath County, KY. Listed also: others not named. He, age 60-70, appeared as head of household on the 1840 US census of Bath County, KY. Listed also: others not named. He appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Bath County, KY, in 1847. No tax lists exist for Bath County 1848- 1870.
James died in Sep 1869 in Greenwood, Pendleton County, KY. There is an unconfirmed and unproven family tradition that says that James Jr died in the home of his son, James, in Pendleton County, KY.The son, James hadmarried Daisy Fraizer and had moved to Pendleton County before 1850.
5.Mary3 McDonald.
Mary married James Jr Sorrell, son of James Sr Sorrell and Mary Unknown, on 20 Oct 1798 in Amherst County, VA.
--- 4th Generation ---
8.James Sr4 Sorrell.James Sr was born in 1750.
James Sr married Mary Unknown.
On 21 Feb 1780, James Sr Sorrell received 50 acres of goverment land. James applied for and received this grant of land for his father, William's, service in the French and Indian Wars with General Braddocks army. This particular set of documents represents and tells us everything we know for sure about William, the father of the Sorrell brothers.
James Sr Sorrell appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Culpeper County, VA, in 1783.
On 17 May 1784, James received 50 acres of goverment land. This land was granted to James because under the primogeniture law in effect in 1784, he as the eldest brother of the family became the heir of all family estates where the deceased died intestate. This land was granted to James as the legal heir of his brother Richard, who died in service in the Revolutionary War.
James Sr Sorrell appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Culpeper County, VA, in 1789. After this date James Sr moved to Amherst County. He appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Amherst County, VA, in 1791.In 1799, James Sr Sorrell sold 50 acres to Henry Hartless in Amherst County, VA.In this transcation James Sorrell & Mary, his wife were listed asselling the property. He appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Amherst County, VA, in 1802. It is not known to where James Sr moved his family after this date and before he appeared in Montgomery County, KY in 1810.He appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Montgomery County, KY, in 1809.He appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Montgomery County, KY, in 1816.He appeared for the first time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Bath County, KY, in 1817.He appeared for the last time on the Personal Property Tax Lists of Bath County, KY, in 1829.
James died circa 1830 in Bath County, KY, We hold no record of James death nor do we know when he died. We know he was alive as late as 1826. In the 1830 Bath census, in the James Jr household is a very old couple, the male listed as 80-90 and the female as 90-100. We suspect this may be James Sr and his wife but it could be someone else. We really do not know.
9.Mary4 Unknown.
Mary married James Sr Sorrell, son of William Sorrell and Ann Un.
--- 5th Generation ---
16.William5 Sorrell.William was born circa 1730.
William married Ann Unknown.
In early 1755 William enlisted in Virginia and served in the 44th Regiment of Foot under General Braddock. In very late 1754, General Edward Braddock, the English general, was issued orders to drive the French out of North America. To that end the 44th Regiment and 48th Regiment of Foot in the British Army, at the time stationed in Ireland were ordered to North America. At the time each regiment had about 500 men each, and Braddock expected to, and did "flesh out" these units to 700 men apiece by recruiting colonials in Virginia and Maryland in early 1755. William Sorrell enlisted in the 44th Regiment of Colonel Hackett. William served with Braddock in the march to Fort Duquesne, near modern Pittsburgh. On July 9th, 1755, at the crossing of the Monongohela River Braddock's army was essentially destroyed by a combined force of French and Indian forces from the fort. William survived and was discharged later in 1755 by Lt Col Gage of future Revolutionary war fame. Both Braddock and Hackett were killed in the battle.
On 03 Mar 1777, during the Revolutionary War, , some 20 years after the completion of his service in the Colonial Wars,William enlisted in the 10th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Establishment. He either enlisted with or joined later two of his sons in the 10th Regiment who had joined in January of 1777. Another son, Thomas had enlisted the previous year in 1776 in another Regiment, the First Continental and was killed either late in 1776 or early 1777. Thomas was killedmost likely at the battle of Princeton in January of 1777 when his regiment took heavy casualties in that battle.
William died circa 1778 in Valley Forge, PA.
William Sorrell was buried in 1778 in an unknown grave, near Valley Forge, PA.
17.Ann5 Unknown.
Ann married William Sor. Note that this marriage is highly speculative. It is based on the following. William Sorrell, father of James and Elisha was dead by 1780. We believe he is the William Sorrell, Revolutionary soldier, who died at Valley Forge, PA in 1778. In 1780 his son, James had filed a claim for his dead father's service in the Colonial Wars. In 1786 in Culpeper County, VA appears a female named Ann Sorrell as the head of a household. She is most likely a Sorrell widow; and we believe it is most likely she isthe widow of William Sorrell, mostly because we know of no one else that it might be. Since the two Sorrell males also listed are the proven sons of William is seems quite probable that this Ann is their mother, the widow of William. As I said it is quite speculative. She could be a spinster lady, even perhaps a sister of the Sorrell brothers of whom we haveno record, or the widow of another Sorrell brother of whom we also have no record.
