Sober family from Estonia

If you put a squiggle (tilde) above the "o" in Sober, it makes an Estonian word meaning "friend". When Estonian peasants were ordered to take surnames in the 1820s and 1830s, my grandmother's grandfather's grandfather took the name Tölpus (bob-tailed?) but his younger brother became Söbber. Later the name was modernised to Sõber. He and his descendents were the only family with this name in north-east Estonia.

If anyone passing through here has an Estonian Sober/Sobber/Sibber connection, could they pause to leave a reply?

Thank you,
Ann
