Hello Richard, We also helped Robert Russell with some of the research on the 'Michigan' Sober line. We knew through genealogical research, that the 'Sober' and 'Soper' line were descended from the immigrant, Henry Soper and his wife, Sarah Wattles. We were asked by Dr. Les Soper to start the DNA project for the Soper lines and related surnames to see if the research was correct, that the lines were related. So far we have had 10 men take the DNA test and all [where the results are in] are related. Waldo Sober was a 25 to 25 match with the main line of Soper [who descend from Henry] [the immigrant]. One line of Soper, which we call the 'Maryland' Soper's, match 12 for 12 on the first 12 markers and have 4 mutations on the next 13 markers. This tells us that the lines do connect but they are many generations ago, perhaps in England. The DNA test is painless and easy. There is a choice of 2 tests available, one is a 12 marker test and the other is a 25 marker test, which is a more decisive test. Through the Soper DNA group there is a discounted price. The 12 marker is $99.00 and the 25 marker is $169.00. If a person took the 12 marker and then wanted to upgrade to the 25, the cost is another $90.00 [on top of the original $99. It is more cost effective to take the 25 marker test from the start. The other interesting item is that when a man tests, he is asked if he will share his results. By saying 'yes', he will continue receiving notices of everyone that his DNA matches. He also receives their email address so correspondence can be carried on. Most people taking the DNA test are interested in genealogy, however, not all. The DNA test is easy. Once the kit is received, the instructions say something like 'take one of the plastic swabs and gently rub it on the inside of the mouth for so many seconds. Then the process is repeated a few hours later or the next day. After the swabing is complete, they are placed in their own tube and both are mailed back. The 12 marker test results come back in about 4 weeks. If the 25 marker is taken the results for the second 13 markers come back about 2 weeks after the 12 marker results. The test is based on the 'Y' chromosome, which is only passed from father to son. The person has to be a 'male' and his name has to be Sober, Soper, Soaper, Sopher, Sofield or any one of the many variations that we know may be connected. Actually, anyone can test, but the names above are ones that stand the chance of being connected. Anyone wishing to test with the DNA group of Soper, can write to us and we'll send an invitation so that you will get the group discount quoted above.
