John,
Glad to see someone else interested in these Snowdens. If you haven't figured them out already, I might be able to help you.I am looking for John Snowden, b. about 1780, who married my Sarah Greer, b. abt 1789, S.C.
In 1831, Sarah and John Snowden are named in her father's estate papers. They are living outside of S.C.In 1854, the children of Sarah Snowden, deceased, are mentioned in her mother's will. Sarah died sometime between 1831 and 1854.If the following man is her husband, we would know that she died prior to 1840.If these are not her children then we would know that she died between 1831 and 1835.
John Snowden of 1840 Camden Co. appears to have come from Colleton S.C. along with the Johns family so I am not yet convinced he is my John Snowden.
I did, however, analyze this family. Since there was another young man, age 20-30 living in the 1840 household, I am prone to think that Mary is John's daughter and not his new wife. The other young man would have been her brother.
Let's assume the young children in 1840 are Mary's.Peter, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary and Lucretia. In her lifetime, Mary had six children.
Nancy may have been married to Thompson.Thompson, reportedly, was killed by indians in Florida. She had Dempsey, Peter, James, Mary and Annie. In her lifetime, Nancy had six children.Mary and Annie may not have been children of Thompson.
Peter (son of Mary and brother of Nancy) married Mary Johns in 1849, Camden Co., Ga.
He shows in the 1860 census with his family.
In 1880 Mary has moved to Fernandina Beach with her daughter Lucretia and her children, the last of which is listed as mixed race.Fernandina was known to have been a refuge for runaway slaves and Tories after the revolution. It would be interesting to learn more about Lucretia.
All in all, these women do not appear to need husbands and the Snowden name stays with them and all of their children.Dempsey and young Peter seem to bounce from Thompson to Snowden so I concur that it is possible Nancy was not actually married to Thompson. It probably is likely that he was their father.
In 1896, a hurricane hit the coast of Northeast Florida.A newspaper article mentioned that Mrs. Peter Snowden sought refuge in a house that blew away.Mr. Peter Snowden is not mentioned.Wonder if they would have referred to her in this manner if he were deceased?
The 1900 census shows Dempsey with Lillian Johns and family.
It also shows Peter, son of Nancy, unmarried and heading a household with his mother and his grandmother, Mary. Mary has two living children of her six.
The 1910 census shows Dempsey and family and his grandmother Mary is now 110 yrs old, living with him.
There was another John Snowden who lived in Alabama and his wife died by 1840.He could also be a candidate for my John Snowden. So, the jury is still out.
If you, or anyone, has additional information on this family or the Alabama family (or any family) that might tie them to my Sarah Greer of Spartanburg, S.C., I would appreciate hearing from you.
