John and Susan, I am puzzled by the data supposedly included in the family bible belonging to Samuel Snowden of Williamsburg. This record was published in the SC Magazine of Ancestral Research(am not sure of the exact name) many years ago, probably in the late seventies or early eighties.Although the description and date of the bible are exactly the same, new information has been added. At that time there was no reference to Ireland, and in fact I know from speaking to members of that family, including William Chandler, that the Ireland connection was made years later and couldn't have been recorded in the bible. Also there was no child listed between Jane and James.I was in contact with several members of the Samuel Snowden Family Association from time to time, and even visited William Chandler at his office in Hemmingway. They told me this bible had belonged to a granddaughter of Samuel and Mary Gibson Snowden, not to the couple themselves, and was obviously written in the same hand, probably all at the same time - not a contemporary record. Also when I was first in touch they didn't know what had happened to James and thought he might be mine, but some years later told me they'd learned he had died young, but gave no source for that information.Samuel and other members of his family are buried in the same church cemetery in Williamsburg, so it seemed odd to me that James would not have been buried with them. Also I certainly wondered about the record of James' death, which I have never found.Unless it was a note or record that surfaced in their immediate family I can't imagine what they could have found.I'm not saying it isn't true - just can't figure this out!
My interest is based on the fact that my ancestor, James Snowden who died in Lauderdale, Ms, 1852 was born in SC, married in Sumter County, and served in the War of 1812 while residing in Clarendon. All the above, of course, adjoin Williamsburg.I'd have to check, but believe the first record of Samuel Snowden in SC is 1789,My James was born in December, 1791, the same year as Samuel's son - and if the granddaughter who owned the bible were reading old, faded script, it would be possible to read September instead of December, the last letters being the same.On the negative side isthe fact that my James had a huge number of sons, all with middle names, but no Samuel anywhere.
I really don't believe Samuel was connected to the second Josuha Snowden.Josuha had two sons, Charles and William, and their baptisms are recorded in church records in Charleston. All indications are that William died young but not too young to have left children, though there is no record that he did.Charles became quite wealthy, always was a resident of Charleston, and did leave known descendants. There are many records involving him and his family. The first Joshua, of course, was father to the second, and probably was an Indian trader as he lived for a long time on the Savannah River when there were virtually no settlers there.
I associate the name Henry with the Aaron Snowden family but can't tell you why at the moment except that some say he was Henry Aaron... would have to go through my records.I believe you can find info about Aaron on this forum, but will be glad to help.Good luck in your search!Helen
