23 Dec 1985 -- Rocky Mountain Business Journal:
CRESTED BUTTE ANNOUNCES MAJOR EXPANSION PLAN, by Steve Marsh.
Since Winter Park announced plans to double its ski terrain earlier this year, Crested Butte [Gunnison Co.] has jumped on the band-wagon with a construction announcement of similar magnitude.
The Mount Crested Butte resort recently approved a master plan for development of base facilities, condominiums, townhomes, a major hotel and restaurants on a 140-acre site adjoining its existing ski village.
To encourage new construction of at least 1,900 condominiums and a 300-room hotel, town planners are ready to break ground on undeveloped Snodgrass Mountain, located opposite the existing ski mountain. It will be connected to the main chairlift system with a new lift designed to run above the base village.
Announcement of new construction plans came days before the town's new $65 million, 263-room Grand Butte Hotel opened for business.
The new portion of Mount Crested Butte's base village has been in planning stages for two years and will include a 200,000-square-foot outdoor mall built to strict covenant requirements.
The new ski mountain will have 400 acres of intermediate and expert trails and will give the resort a capacity of 11,000 skiers per day, almost double its current size.
Developers of the proposed base village at the foot of Snodgrass Mountain will build under strict design covenants that monitor exterior materials, height restrictions and preservation of open space. Residential units will be limited to 13 per acre.
Grand plans also allow for construction of a 350-room hotel in the new village and a system of 11 new chairlifts on Snodgrass Mountain, said Mount Crested Butte planning director Paul O'Connor. He questioned the projected $25 million cost of developing new ski trails, however, saying: "I think $24 million could be spent on snowmaking alone."
The cost of competition has led to a new announcement of another $11 million expansion of the nearby Gunnison airport. Now jet-capable and served by American Airlines, the airport has received a multimillion-dollar shot in the arm during the past two years.
That expansion has Crested Butte anticipating a 30 percent increase in skier visits this year. That hope, O'Connor said, "has everyone sitting on the edge of their chairs."
If tourism increases according to plan, construction on the new ski mountain would begin next summer <1986>, said Gus Larkin, vice president of Crested Butte Mountain Resort Inc.
