Samuel had come to Mifflinburg in 1855 from Dauphin Co. and had engaged in milling with his brother-in-law, William Young, the produce and grocery business, and, for a time, operated a tannery. Then in 1869 he opened a hardware store--the only establishment dealing exclusively in that line. He was successful from the start. The new building extended from the street to the alley, and had show windows of French plate glass, which the Telegraph described as, "Mammoth in size, where Jim, the proprietor's son, will evince his good taste in displaying fancy hardware." There were wide counters of walnut and maple, beautifully finished, and a handsome stairway at the rear led to a spacious showroom on the second floor. At the press of a button a counter "flopped out of sight, a door opened, and we could pop down a stairway to a ware-room for bar iron." The newspaper also had compliments for the builder, Enoch Miller, Mifflinburg's noted architect, who had supervised the work, and for Bowes and Swineford, who had painted the interior. Mifflinburg's most exciting business tycoon during the second half of the nineteenth century was William Young. Born on a farm in Kelley Twp., in 1816 he clerked in stores at Northumberland and Danville during his teens; and then at 21 he came to Mifflinburg to work for his uncle, Berryhill Bell, a general merchandiser. A few years later he bought the store and opened another in Hartleton; and broadening his investments, he dealt also in coal and grain. In 1857 he erected the town's most elegant residence on the south side of Chestnut St. midway between Third and Fourth Streets. Designed by Lewis Palmer, the noted Lewisburg architect, and superintended by Thomas T. Baker, a Lewisburg builder, the three story Italianate brick structure with twin Victorian porches and square tower was the "last word" in contemporary architecture. A local newspaper spoke only modestly when it referred to it as "a little superior in style and conveniences to any building in town." Members of the family lived there for two generations, before it was acquired by the town as a borough hall. William Young married Eleanor Snodgrass, and they were blessed with seven daughters and six sons. Mifflinburg residents still recall Hadwin, one of the younger sons, the tallest man in town--jovial, yet dignified, sitting with friends on the porch or playing chess with one of his brothers. During the Civil War William organized and became the first president of the First National Bank of Mifflinburg, the earliest banking institution. With a nod toward tourism, he also built Young's Hotel at Fifth and Chestnut Streets in the early 1860's, a hostelry remembered as the Buffalo Valley Inn. There is a story, probably apocryphal, that Young and Harry Robbins of Mt. Carmel purchased valuable properties at panic prices in Philadelphia just after General Lee invaded Pennsylvania, and when he was expected momentarily to march on Philadelphia. After the battle at Gettysburg they sold them at inflated prices! If this tradition is without foundation, the fact remains that he was an acute businessman. An old Mifflinburg maxim was not far from the mark, which alleged that Young made more money at his grain mill at Fourth and Railroad Streets before breakfast than any other businessman earned all day! Young organized and was president of a bank in Reading and a director of banks in Williamsport, Scranton, Pittston, Chester, and Philadelphia, and sandwiched between his business dealings he served for a term in the state House of Representatives in 1871--elected on the Democratic ticket in the Union, Snyder, and Lycoming district. After thirty-eight years in Mifflinburg he moved to Germantown, where he built another fine home, helped to found the Northern Bank of Philadelphia, and joined Robert F. Whitmer in a lumber and planing mill business on Broad Street. Meanwhile, he left his sons in charge of his banking and mercantile interests in Mifflinburg. Two of his ventures ran upon shoals, but he salvaged his investments. The National Bank of Mifflinburg prospered for a time, and in twelve years returned dividends in excess of the original cost of the stock. Then it fell a victim of the panic of 1873 and was liquidated in 1880. A second ill-fated venture involved the purchase of a graphite mine near Phoenixville. Veins of ore that the sellers had represented proved nonexistent, and Young went to court, where he was eventually awarded damages. "Winning that big suit," the Telegraph exulted, "makes him look at least ten years younger." The erstwhile merchant, miller, and banker died at 88 in 1904 while visiting his sons in Mifflinburg. <Desc. of 2 Benjamin Snodgrass of Bucks Co., PA> 1978 -- Buckness University Alumni Directory [Union Co., PA]: Robert Frederick Snodgrass, Class of 1926; 506 Sherman St., Muncy, PA 17756. ================================================ Notify Administrator about this message?
