13 May 1893 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Pleasant Re-union at the Holmes Homestead Saturday.
Saturday 13 May will be a memorable day to George Y. Holmes Sr., of Donegal twp. and his children, for on that day the children all assembled, according to previous arrangements, again at the old homestead and celebrated their fathers 73d birthday. Mr. Holmes was born 18 May 1820 in Scotland, and emigrated to America in 1830 or at 10 years of age. In 1832 with his parents he moved to the farm on which he still resides, being in continuous residence for 61 years.
Mr. Holmes is one of Donegals oldest citizens, and has been favored with Justice of the Peace and other twp. offices a number of times, he being a strong Republican in politics. He is a deacon in the First Baptist church of this place, and was for many years a local preacher, and only a few Sabbaths ago filled the pulpit during the absence of his pastor, for several years after the organization of the church here he was superintendent of the Sabbath school, and it was very seldom he missed. Mrs. Holmes [Elizabeth Snodgrass] died several years ago.
All his children were present and once again gladdened the old father's heart, and with them several of his grandchildren whose gay laughter and merry prattle lent an additional charm to the occasion. The following are the names of the children: William of Chartiers; John, of Donegal twp.; Geo. Y. Jr., of Claysville; Robt. R. of McDonald; Mrs. S. _. Kelley of Buffalo twp., Mrs. C. W. Miller of Coon Island, Mrs. W. W. Reaney of Donegal, and Miss Maggie at home.

1896 -- History of Washington Co.:
pages 369-371:
George Young Holmes, Sr., the oldest living representative of the family, was born at Saltcoats, Scotland, 13 May 1820. His grandfather, William Holmes, in his youth became a sailor, and so faithful was he in the discharge of his duties on shipboard, that he was rapidly promoted, rising from apprentice to the position of captain on a large vessel plying between Norway and Scotland. While superintending the lading of his vessel in a Norway port, he was accidentally killed, and his body was buried in that country about 1781 or 1782. His clothing and other effects were sent home to his grief-stricken family, in an old sea-chest which half a century later was brought to America, and is still (1893) in existence. Some years prior to his death, Capt. Holmes married Elizabeth Brown, and resided at Saltcoats, a seaport then of considerable importance, producing large quantities of salt. Ship-building was also in a very flourishing condition then and for many years afterward. The family consisted of four children: Robert, William, Martha, and Elizabeth. Mrs. Holmes, a woman of rare ability, possessing to a remarkable degree the energy characteristics of the Scotch people, began immediately the training and education of her little family, and she lived to see all of them respected members of society, reflecting honor upon her loving care.
The maternal grandfather, William Brown, then a master weaver, took Robert and William as apprentices at hand-loom weaving, a trade of great importance prior to the invention of the power-loom. They continued at this trade for some time, but Robert's taste inclined toward the study of medicine. With William's assistance, he was graduated from the University of Glasgow, attended the medical lectures at Dublin, and began the practice of medicine at Saltcoats, but within a year he died of typhus fever contracted from one of his patients. For some years William continued at his trade, and in his spare moments, by diligently applying himself to study, he became an excellent English scholar and a fine penman. For some time he held the position of clerk in the Irvin Bank, and after his marriage engaged in the grocery business. He was then appointed postmaster and agent for the sale of Government stamped paper, which positions he retained until he emigrated to America. Although holding office under the Crown for many years with loyalty above reproach, he was an ardent Republican, and believed firmly in government by the people. In 1803 he married Elizabeth, fourth daughter of John McNilledge, of Glasgow. They had ten children, three of whom died in infancy. Margaret, the eldest, married and remained in Scotland, dying in 1836. The other children, namely: Robert, Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, George Young, and Agnes Jane, with their parents, emigrated to America in 1830.
The deplorable condition of trade which had existed in Great Britain from the fall of Napoleon in 1815, until this time, induced him to sever the ties which bound him to his native land and seek a home and a grave in the Western World. On 22 Apr 1830, he, with his family, set sail on the "Rodger Stewart," an American-built vessel which had been captured by the British in the war of 1812. During the long voyage of six weeks and four days, he kept a journal accurately recording the incidents of each day, the condition of the weather, etc., and from this journal, still in existence, we take the following:
"Friday, 7 May 1830--It blew hard all last night and the ship rolled very much. George Young (George Y. Holmes, Sr.) was sent for a little water. Standing beside Robert, the ship gave a heavy roll. He ran to the lee side and struck violently against the bulwarks, then fell and gave a cry. Robert ran to his assistance and found that his thigh bone, right leg, was fractured. After a good deal of trouble and delay, we got it set and him put to bed in a small berth in the poop of the ship. He was rather uneasy, restless and pained, but behaved very well."
Early in the morning of 13 May the passengers were aroused from their sleep by the cry of "Fire!" Mr. Holmes, in his journal, says: "When the word was given, 'The ship is on fire,' one general cry of agony and despair arose from the women and children such as I never heard before and I hope shall never hear again." The fire had its origin in the cabin, and had gained considerable headway before being discovered, but by the combined efforts of crew and passengers the flames were finally extinguished. The journal continues: "And now that the danger is over, ought we not to praise God for His goodness and His works of wonder." The remainder of the voyage was uneventful, and at length the "Rodger Stewart" entered the harbor of New York. On the day he landed, Mr. Holmes wrote: "god's mercies are indeed new unto us every morning, and great reason have we to bless His name who has so far guided us on our way."
After securing comfortable rooms for his family in New York, he presented letters of introduction to Mr. Buchanan, British consul. This gentleman received him cordially, and gave him a letter to the governor of Upper Canada. Accompanied by his son Robert, he set out on his memorable prospecting tour from New York to Albany, thence to Buffalo, thence to Toronto. Here he met the Governor and also a large land-holder, a Scotchman, named Stevens, who made him a tender of 200 acres of unbroken timber land, but not being entirely satisfied with Canada, they retraced their steps, re-entering the United States at Niagara Falls. Thence they journeyed southward until they reached Claysville, Washington Co., PA, and being well pleased with this section they decided to locate upon the farm now owned by Mr. D. M. Campsey, one mile northwest of Claysville. Mr. Holmes then returned to New York and brought his family by water to Baltimore, MD, thence by road-wagon to the home which he had provided for them, and where he expected to spend the remaining years of his life. Two years later he purchased for $1,000 the farm of 120 acres, now owned by George Y. Holmes Sr. here he resided until his death in 1847. In his younger days he united with the Baptist church in his native land, and for more than 20 years was pastor of the church in Saltcoats. After coming to America he continued to preach to his friends and neighbors, who would gather in the farm house on Sabbath days. He had been well acquainted with Sir Walter Scott, and through the reading of his works and his conversation with the novelist himself, he became imbued with the spirit of the antiquarian; he gained possession of many rare coins, of an old family Bible published in 1576, and of a clock which is still keeping good time at the age of 150 years. His wife died in 1869 at the advanced age of 91 years.
At the death of his father, George Y. Holmes Sr. purchased the homestead upon which he has lived continuously for 61 years. Of the Holmes family who emigrated to America in 1830, he and his youngest sister, Mrs. Agnes J. Laird, are the only living representatives. In 1846 he married Elizabeth, second daughter of John Snodgrass, and they had four sons and four daughters, all of whom are still living. Mr. Holmes is the only survivor of the fifteen Abolitionists of Donegal twp., who voted the Free-Soil ticket until the formation of the Republican party. His life has been quiet and uneventful. Following in the footsteps of his father, he has been a consistent member of the Baptist church for many years. Although not an ordained minister, he preached for the churches of this denomination located at North Wheeling, Buffalo, and Washington, PA, and occasionally he occupies the pulpit of his pastor, Rev. S. L. Parcell, of the First Baptist Church of Claysville, PA. Since the death of his wife, which event occurred 20 Jun 1884, Mr. Holmes has continued to reside upon his farm, which he still superintends, although 73 years of age and past active labor. Having inherited a love for good literature, he is an indefatigable reader of history, poetry, and the better class of fiction. Thus he is spending the declining days of his life in peaceful enjoyment of comfortable circumstances, the result of many years of care and labor.

Samuel B. Lindley, s/o Lewis Lindley and Bethany Day, was born in Morris twp., Washington Co., PA, and received a good education in the common schools. In 1841 he came to Claysville, Donegal twp., and served an apprenticeship of two and a half years with Daniel Kirk, a harness and saddle maker. He afterward remained a year or two in the employ of Mr. Kirk, doing the work of a journeyman. He then went to West Finley towp., this county, where he remained two years, thence to Greene county, same state, and lived there two years. He then engnaged in the milling business at Lone Pine, Washington county, and three years later purchased a farm in West Finley towp., residing upon it twelve years. Finally he settled in his present home in Claysville. In early life he married Isabella ___, who bore him two children: Lewis and Lucretia (Mrs. Russell). For his second wife he was united in marriage with Margaret Laird <d/o John Laird & Peggy Snodgrass>, and she also had two children: Eliza (Mrs. Theodore Bell) and John K. His third wife was Mary Alexander, and to their union were born children as follows: Alexander, Mary (Mrs. Dr. McDough), Montville, Elias D., Luther D., Laura L., and Mary. For his fourth wife he married Mrs. Mary Hendershot, and they have two daughters: Bessie and Cordelia C.
On 8 Aug 1862 Mr. Lindley enlisted in Company K, 16th PA Vol. Cav., and served throughout the war in the army of the Potomac. Before the war he was a Democrat, but since that time has voted the Republican ticket.

John Laird, a worthy representative of one of the oldest families of Donegal twp., is a native of the same, born 4 Jun 1828.
His paternal grandfather, John Laird, was born in Ireland in 1758, and was there married to Mary Snodgrass, who bore him children as follows: Alexander, Margaret (wife of Joseph Hayburn), Robert, Jesse, James, and John. He came to the United States about 1792, alone, and finding employment on a farm, worked diligently until he had earned sufficient means to bring his family from the "ould sod." Receiving the necessary welcome remittance, Mrs. Laird, Alexander, jesse, margaret, and John Jr. crossed the broad Atlantic, and about 1800, after landing, with some difficulty found their father, who had set out to meet them with a team. He brought them to his new home in Lancaster Co., PA, and the following year they moved by wagon to Washington county, where they made a settlement near Taylorstown, Mr. Laird having purchased a tract of land in Donegal twp. John Laird died 3 Jun 1838, his wife having preceded him to the grave in Feb 1829. Politically he was a Democrat, and took a lively interest in the advancement of his adopted country. Robert and James Laird, uncles of the subject of this sketch, came over subsequentlly.
John Laird, son of this piooneer, was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in Apr 1792, and when yeet a boy came with the rest of the family to the United States and to Washington county, where he received his educaiton. When yet a young man he was married to Margaret, daughter of William and Margaret (Todd) Snodgrass, of Donegal twp., the former a native of Ireland, the latter of Scotland. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Laird were Jesse, Roberet, James, William A., John, Mary J. (wife of Samuel Dougherty), Grizzella, and Margaret (Mrs. S. B. Lindley). The mother of this family dying 15 Dec 1835, Mr. Laird married for his second wife Agnes Maxwell, who died 8 Feb 1878 leaving one child, Ann E. (wife of Dr. John W. Kelly). Mr. Laird departed this life 18 Jul 1847. He was one of the first members, and all his life a substantial supporter, of the Presbyterian Church at Claysville. Politically he was a Democrat, and took an active interest in educational matters in his locality. Entreprising and energetic, he was self made, succeeding by hard labor and unceasing toil in amassing, before retiring from active work, a comfortable competence.
John Laird, the subject proper of these lines, was reared to farm life, and what education he succeeded in securing was obtained at the subscription schools, but he is chiefly self-educated, having devoted much of his spare time to reading at home. On 8 Jan 1852, he was united in marriage with Eveline Potter, who was born in Marshall county, WV, 11 Mar 1828, a daughter of John Potter, a native of Washington county, PA, where he marrried a Miss Supler, a native of Donegal tpw., same county. Soon after their marriage they moved to Marshall county, WV, where they purchased a large tract of land and where the father also followed milling. They reared a large family of children and resided there until their deaths. Mrs. laird died 14 Sep 1876. Mr. Laird remained on the old home farm in Donegal twp. until 1872, in which year he came to Claysville, where he has since resided. He is a member of the Presbyterian church, and in politics is a lifelong solid Democrat.

The wedding was a prettily appointed event, pink and white in color effects. The high standing of the contracting parties, too, made it a notable social event. The spacious parlor was tastefully trimmed with pretty fall flowers and ferns, while in the roomy bay window hung a beautiful floral bell, beneath which the principals took their places to the strains of the wedding march charmingly rendered by Miss Jessie Drake, of Massilon, OH. The bride was attired in a handsome gown of paue<sic> de soine and carried white roses. ca. 1904 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA)
Samuel G. Snodgrass, of near town, owns a flock of grade Dorset Horn ewes which have made a good record for raising lambs. Early this spring one ewe gave birth to a pair of lambs which weighed 16 pounds at birth. He has 26 ewes this season, which are raising 37 lambs. Last year a ewe of this flock gave birth to four lambs and raised three of them, while the flock of 28 ewes raised 42 lambs. For the season of 1902 the same flock raised 41 lambs. In this flock are two ewes eight years old, which belong to a set of triplets and the two have given birth to 28 lambs--having two each spring since they were two years old.

1904 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Snodgrass Family Reunion.
The descendants of John Snodgrass, who settled on the farm now owned by John Holmes, about four miles north of town, early in the 19th century, held an informal but none the less enjoyable family reunion on Friday last, in Campsey's grove. While there may not have been a promise to them like that to Abraham, yet there is a numerous list of descendants, grouped about in many localities. Only about 50 persons attended this occasion, the forerunner of more to come. Among those present were Oscar McMillan and wife, of McMechen; Bert Snodgrass and wife of Benwood; James Snodgrass and wife of Burgettstown; Prof. J. A. Snodgrass and family, of Taylorstown, and others from Donegal Twp. and this place. It was decided to have a permanent organization and arrange for future reunions. A committee was appointed consisting of R. G. Snodgrass, <torn off>, Martin Ralston, <rest missing>.

28 Jun 1905 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA)
An ideal June day was Wednesday, 28 Jun, the hour of three in the afternoon of which was the time set for the marriage of Mr. Russell Brodbeck, of Wheeling, and Miss Susan Bearley Snodgrass. The event took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Snodgrass, and half a hundred guests were interested witnesses of the ceremony.
Deft fingers arranged tasty greenery decorations in parlor and dining room. Toward the bay window of the parlor a handsome, shapely white bell was suspended, beneath which the vows were taken. Instrumental renditions of a selection from Lohengrin and "Sweetest Story ever Told," by Miss Matilda Snodgrass, with the pretty love song, "O Promise Me," sung by Mrs. Blanche Eaton, of Wilkinsburg, lead up to the wedding march from Lohengrin, which signalled the entrance of the groom alone, followed by little Miss Josephine Snodgrass as ring bearer. Then the bride in a dainty gown of white, carrying a huge bouquet of white roses and accompanied by her father.
The ring ceremony was performed by her pastor, Rev. W. H. Kirkland, of the M. E. church, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. O. J. Watson, of Cokeville, PA. Congratulations were in order and then the guests were invited to a fine wedding dinner. A nice list of mementos from friends was received.
Toward express time the friends went off to the depot to shower rice at bride and groom and otherwise show a not always pleasant interest in speeding their departure. But they reckoned without the groom, for he had his liveryman drive his bride and himself six miles to West Alexander to take a train for Wheeling. They went on to Mr. Brodbeck's former home at Orbisonia, PA, to remain over Sunday and continue on for an eastern trip.
Mr. Brodbeck is at present special agent for the Remington Typewriter Co., for West Virginia, with headquarters in Wheeling, in which city they will reside temporarily, at least.
Mrs. Brodbeck is one of our best girls, of sunny disposition, a loyal, industrious, generous young woman, and faithful church worker.
Among the guests from distant points were Prof. J. A. Snodgrass, of Charleroi, principal-elect of the Luckey school, Pittsburgh, with his wife and babe; Mrs. O. J. Watson and Miss Elizabeth Watson of Cokeville; Mrs. Daisy Flack, of Verona; Rev. G. E. Brenneman, of Dravosburg; Mrs. Andrew Kirk, Mrs. Blanch Eaton and daughter Dorothy and Miss Hazel Kirk, of Wilkinsburg; Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Barr and Miss Clara Miller, of Washington; Miss Laura Bell Cochran, of Louisville, KY; John W. Ross, of Ambridge; Lester Lacock, of Vankirk Station; Mrs. Margaret Patterson, of near West Alexander.

4 Jul 1905 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Celebrated the 4th by Being Wed.
At the wedding of Miss Sue Snodgrass and Russell Brodbeck 28 Jun the question which sister will be next in taking the marriage vow, was propounded, and to those outside the family circle it was rather unexpectedly answered on Tuesday, July 4th. Mr. John Wesley Ross and Miss Jennie Snodgrass, accompanied by Mr. Fred McConahey, of Pittsburgh, and Miss Hazel Kirk, of Wilkinsburg, went to Steubenville, OH. Mr. Ross had secured the license the day before, so they wended their way to the Second Presbyterian parsonage, where Rev. Sam Boston tied the nuptial knot uniting Mr. Ross and Miss Snodgrass. The party returned the same evening. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Snodgrass, who had been informed of the step the lovers were about to take. Mr. Ross is a native of Des Moines, IA, his father, now deceased, being founder and publisher of the Des Moines Daily Leader. His mother resides in Buffalo, NY. He was employed as draftsman and time keeper in the South Pittsburgh iron works, but is now with the American Bridge Co., at Ambridge, PA.

1905 (probably fall) -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Snodgrass Family Reunion.
About 75 persons attended the reunion of the Snodgrass family in Campsey's grove, north of town, Thursday. Among them were representatives of the Ralston, two Snodgrass, Holmes, and Smith families, with none present from two Snodgrass and Essick families.
The event was of a formal nature, with general social enjoyment. A grand big dinner was served at noon, baskets having been prepared by the ladies, and "I'd like to have been there, wouldn't you?" G. Y. Holmes gave a sketch of the ancestors with several amusing incidents. The ancestors were John and Nancy Glover Snodgrass, who were located on the farm now owned by John Holmes more than 100 years ago. The father died in 1863 and the mother in 1874. They had 10 or 11 children, two of whom died. The others all marrying while living on the place.
Prof. John Snodgrass, of Pittsburgh, who with two children was present, gave a short talk. There was much good music. Rev. D. N. Snodgrass, who was present with his wife from Harlan, KY, was leader and solo singer.
Among the others present were Rev. G. W. Snodgrass, of Vinita, OK; R. R. Holmes, of McDonald; Wm. Holmes and wife, of near Washington; Edgar Miller and family, of Elk Lick; Will Smith and wife, of West Finley; George Smith of Graysville; W. B. Hunter and family, of near West Alexander; M. R. Barr and wife, of Washington; Mrs. Samuel Kelly and son Rupert, of S. Bridge; M. G. Ralston and family, of near Taylorstown, and the local resident section of the descendants. Mrs. Samuel Snodgrass, aged 73, was the only representative of the older set present.

1908 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Snodgrass Family Reunion.
The weather was delightful for the Snodgrass reunion held Thursday in John Holmes' orchard, the old Snodgrass place. When such a crowd gets together there are few words to express what took place. One has said, "They talked, and they talked." That wasn't the sum of the whole, for there was at least one period when a just devotion was given to the excellent provisions furnished by the ladies of the big family for the big picnic. Songs were sun and Rev. __ N. Snodgrass found he wasn't addressing Kentucky mountaineers when he began to talk to the family. No doubt the mountaineers gave him a better chance. The family history, the early part by the late Rev. G. Y. Holmes and the later section brought up to date by Prof. John A. Snodgrass, was not read at this time. The several branches of the family were well represented.
Of the older surviving generation, G. W. Snodgrass, of Cross Creek; Michael and Mary Snodgrass Essick, of Prole, IA; and Mrs. Matilda Snodgrass were present.
Of the third generation there were six families represented--Mrs. Oscar McWilden<sic> of Benwood, WV; Mrs. Frank Rodgers and Robert Snodgrass, of Claysville; John Westley Snodgrass, Empire, OH.
Martha G. Ralston, of Taylorstown; John Ralston, of Claysville; and Mrs. W. B. Hunter, West Finley.
W. James Snodgrass, of near Burgettstown; Joseph J. Snodgrass, Coon Island.
William T. Smith, of West Finely, G. W. Smith of Graysville.
Wm. Holmes of Washington; John Holmes of Donegal; Mrs. G. W. Miller and George Y. Holmes, of Claysville; Mrs. Samuel F. Kelly, Buffalo twp.; Miss Margaret J. Holmes, Claysville; R. R. Holmes, of McDonald.
Prof. John A. Snodgrass, of Pittsburgh; Rev. G. W. Snodgrass, of Vinita, I.T.; Rev. D. N. Snodgrass, of Harlan, KY; and T. C. Snodgrass, of Donegal.
Among descendants of Peggy Snodgrass Laird present were Mrs. Agnes White, Mrs. Belle Bell, Mrs. Sarah DeFrance.
In all, about 150 persons were present, many of them fourth generation. The occasion was very enjoyable to all. Many old neighbors participated.

27 Mar 1910 -- (obituary, Washington Co., PA) John C. Snodgrass.
Samuel M. Snodgrass received a telegram Sabbath evening, 27 Mar, announcing the death of his brother, John C. Snodgrass, of Los Angeles, CA. His death had occurred the same morning. Mr. Snodgrass was a veteran of the civil war. He was one of the witnesses to surrender by Gen. R. E. Lee to Gen. U. S. Grant at Appomattox. When Gen. Sheridan made his famous ride from Winchester, VA, to the battlefield at Cedar Creek, rallying and reforming the Union army, Mr. Snodgrass was one of the boys who responded and helped to turn defeat into a brilliant victory. He participated in all of the three-days' fighting at ___burg, as well as in may other . . . fought battles. His company took part in some of the worst fighting of the conflict, as of the 107 who went out only 18 of them got back home. Mr. Snodgrass spent several weeks with his father here last spring. The deceased was a native of Crestline, OH. One other brother survives, James Snodgrass, who resides in Michigan.

1911 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Holmes Family Reunion.
The fourth triennial reunion of the Snodgrass family was held Wednesday in Campsey's grove. It was an ideal day and the attendants numbered about <missing>. The committee to arrange for the reunion in 1914 consists of Prof. J. A. Snodgrass, R. R. Holmes, and R. G. Snodgrass. Among those who made the pilgrimage from more distant points were, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Essick, of Prole, IA; D. N. Snodgrass, of Harlan, KY; Prof. J. S. Snodgrass and family, and Jas. A. Smith and family, of Pittsburgh; James and George Snodgrass, of Burgettstown; Miss Florence Snodgrass, of Steubenville, and Wm. Smith, of Burnsville. 10 May 1912 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Claysville Girl in Lead of New York's Big Suffragette Parade.
A former Claysville girl took part in the big suffragette demonstration in New York city on Saturday, when 15,000 women appeared in a monster parade. This was Mrs. Jennie Snodgrass Ross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. <Robert Graham> Snodgrass. Mrs. Ross was one of those described in a United Press special thus: "Fifty athletic, bright-eyed women, mounted on lively horses, were the first glimpse of the suffrage parade. And they rode well. Cheers greeted them all along the way." Of course Mrs. Ross rode well, for did you ever see a woman born in Old Donegal who couldn't ride well? Women of all classes and many nationalities took part.

29 Dec 1912 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Wilmer--Snodgrass
At high noon December 29, occurred the marriage of Miss Edna Wilmer, of Williamsport, IN, and David Snodgrass, of Claysville, PA. The ceremony took place in the Presbyterian church and was performed by the father of the bride, Rev. William Wilmer, who has been pastor of the church for 35 years. After the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride. Only the immediate family was served to the bountiful repast. They were Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer, the bride and groom, and Dr. and Mrs. F. C. Todd, of Lafayette. Many and elaborate were the presents to the bride, both from the church and Christian Endeavor society of this city and Attica, where the bride's father was pastor for 29 years.
The bridal party left on the afternoon train for Lafayette, where they will be the guests of Dr. and Mrs. F. C. Todd, sister of the bride. The bride has been a teacher in many of the schools of Warren county and has a host of loving friends. She has been employed as teacher in a Presbyterian church in Harlan, KY, for the past two and a half years.
The groom is employed as a missionary by the Presbyterian Home Mission Board. His work is principally confided to organizing Sunday-schools in Harlan county. It was here at Harlan academy he met the bride. A rather romantic courtship ended in marriage.--Lafayette, Ind. Journal.

16 Jul 1915 -- (newspaper clipping, Washington Co., PA) Snodgrass Golden Wedding.
On 10 May 1865, Miss Esther Hannah Graham, of Taylorstown, was united in marriage to Mr. Samuel McCullough Snodgrass, near Crestline, OH, with Rev. J. R. Johnston, pastor of the First U. P. church of Washington, officiating. They started in a buggy next day for Mahoning Co., OH, a journey of about two days, which is now made by auto in five hours. The bride of half a century was a daughter of Samuel and Hannay Way Graham, her birthplace being on the Neely farm. But the groom had Crestline, OH, as his birthplace, son of William and Margaret Chambers Snodgrass. As a youth he hauled stone for the construction of the Crestline, Columbus & Cincinnati Railway through that town. Later on he was sent on business to Washington Co., PA, where he had cousins and uncles and aunts. After that he came a'courting and the wedding followed. Not much time was given in <line(s) not xeroxed> (now Milt Irwin, farm) where they remained three years. Leaving there they went to the John McDowell farm and after six years, in 1875, they located on their present farm, which they purchased through means secured by economy and industry. The farm was then run down, a rail fence ran close in front of the dilapidated house surrounded by tall woods, quite in contrast with their present splendid farm residence modernly equipped and beautifully situated. Then the oil development came and they received a goodly share of the product of the 17 wells drilled on the farm, a single well yielding as high as 300 to 400 barrels a day. But with these means the habits of life were not changed, the same industry prevailed and the same neighborliness to those for miles about them continued, and the family stands high wherever known.
They have the following five children living: Margaret, who married Andrew Kerr, of near Coffey's Crossing; Mary Hannah, the wife of John Maxwell, of near Buffalo; Eleanor and Samuel G., at home, and John G., who lives near his father's residence.
Conditions did not suit for the anniversary on 10 May, so Friday, 9 July, was chosen on which to celebrate the golden wedding, the birthday anniversary of Mr. Snodgrass being the day before. The home was handsomely decorated in colors of gold and lavender. Mr. Snodgrass wore the suit in which he was married, and though 50 years old, it still fit him fairly well and was in good condition. He and Mrs. Snodgrass received their guests in the parlor, beneath a golden wedding bell with combination of yellow streamers, wheat, cut flowers, ferns and pines arranged into an effective arch, tasty because of the simplicity. They were assisted by their daughter, Miss Eleanor, who with Miss Nell Jackson looked after the comfort of the guests, and Misses Margaret Jackson and Ferne Patterson were aids at the table. There were three small flower girls who filled their parts well, gowned in white with yellow sashes, Margaret Duvall, Mildred Hamilton, and Mildred Henderson. The dining room was ornamented in yellow and white, and with cut flowers. In the afternoon there was a hundred guests present and in the evening a like number. Caterer Mosebay, of Washington, provided for the inner man, and the John Flack orchestra furnished splendid music. 48 guests were provided for at a sitting. The hours were 1 to 5 and 5 to 10.
The guests included the following: Mrs. Frank Drake, Massilen, OH; Mrs. and Mrs. S. D. Stiffey, and Miss Mary Walker, Blairsville, PA; Will Chambers, Mrs. Mary Cowden, Mrs. and Mrs. S. McClurg, Poland, OH; Mrs. W. Clark and Lionel Clarke, Pittsburgh.

7 Nov 1915 -- (obituary, Washington Co., PA)
The death of Esther Hannah Graham, wife of Samuel Snodgrass, occurred at their home in Buffalo twp. about one mile east of Crothers, at 2:46 p.m. Sunday 7 Nov 1915, aged 79 years. Her passing away was sudden. She had been able to go about the house, was taken very ill, and died within half an hour.
Mrs. Snodgrass was born on the Neely farm near Taylorstown in the year 1836, daughter of Samuel and Hannah Way Graham. Her life, excepting those several months in Ohio following her marriage to Samuel Snodgrass, 10 May 1865, was spent in this community. They first resided on the Nealy farm, then on the present Milt Irwin farm three years, and the John McDowell farm six years. In 1875 they purchased and located on their present farm, which they improved greatly, making of it one of the best in this fertile section. She proved an excellent helpmeet, affable of disposition, gentle in manner, kind at heart, industrious and careful in her management of the home, a devoted wife and mother and a cherished neighbor. In early life she united with North Buffalo United Presbyterian church and her church life continued faithful through more than sixty years, the later period of which was as a member of Taylorstown United Presbyterian congregation.
On 9 Jun last, the birth anniversary of Mr. Snodgrass, they celebrated their golden wedding, and a wide circle of their hosts of friends participated.
She leaves to mourn her departure her husband and five of the seven children born to them: Margaret, wife of Andrew Kerr, near Coffey's Crossing; John G. Snodgrass, of Buffalo twp.; Mary Hanna, wife of John C. H. Maxwell, near Buffalo Village; Miss Eleanor and Samuel G. Snodgrass, at home. One sister also is living--Mrs. Nancy McCullough, of Claysville.
The funeral service was held at eleven o'clock Wednesday forenoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. R. B. Harsha, who was assisted by Dr. A. MacLachlan, Rev. T. P. Prouffit, Rev. Frank Crosby, Rev. J. C. Hamilton, and Rev. H. L. Hood. It was an impressive service, and the tributes were appropriate and worthy of the life of the deceased. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, representing in a way the beauty of her life and character. There was a large attendance, indicative of the large circle of close friends the family holds in the community. The eight pall bearers included six cousins: Messrs. H. L. Snodgrass, M.D., Wm. Snodgrass, Frank Snodgrass, Samuel Ely, Howard Ely, R. G. Buchanan, A. W. Clemens, Charles Risher. The interment was in the family lot in Claysville cemetery.
Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Robert Snodgrass, of Mansfield, OH; Mrs. H. L. Snodgrass, of Gallion, OH; Mrs. Lottie Ripley, of Poland, OH; Mrs. James Chambers, of Youngstown, OH; Mrs. Anna Snodgrass, of Crestline, OH; Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Stiffey, of Blairsville, PA; Rev. and Mrs. Crosby and others from <xerox ends here>

7 Jul 1919 -- (obituary, Washington Co., PA) Prof. M. R. Snodgrass Dies at Patton, CA, July 7.
Prof. Milton R. Snodgrass, perhaps the foremost educator of the native sons of Donegal twp., died at Patton, CA, Monday 7 Jul 1919, in his first year.
He leaves his wife, one daughter married, and one son, Dewey Lee. Also his aged mother, Mrs. Matilda Snodgrass, two sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Frank Rodgers and Samuel Snodgrass, of Claysville, the latter carrier on rural route two; Joel Snodgrass of Moscow, KS; John Snodgrass, of Weirton, WV; Robert Snodgrass, near Claysville; and Mrs. Nannie Stull, of Moscow, KS.
Prof. Snodgrass was born at Achison, where his father was postmaster many years, 13 Jan 1859, son of Samuel (deceased) and Matilda Lambourn Snodgrass. He received his education in the township schools and the State Normal school of California, PA, from which he was graduated in 1882. He began teaching in 1876, in local schools, and from 1882 to 1884 was principal or the school at Burgettstown. The latter year he went to Nebraska and was principal and superintendent of the schools of Osceola and Wisner covering a period of 20 years. At the founding of the State Normal school at Kearney, NE, he accepted the chair of mathematics, and for near a year was acting president of the institution. Ill health from a breakdown compelled him to retire from teaching 1 Jan 1915. In the vain hope of regaining his health he went to California a short time afterward and remained until his death. The following tribute was published in The Antelope, the paper of the normal school.
"Dean Snodgrass is an active Christian man, living daily a life that is a positive influence for good. He is a man of natural culture and refinement, of deep sympathy for others, always ready to do more than his share of duties that might seem difficult, as he looks upon life as service. He is most thoroughly prepared for his work as a teacher and allows no opportunity for self improvement to pass unimproved. He is an excellent teacher, thorough, sympathetic, and full of inspiration for his students. The past nine and a half years of his life have been entirely devoted to this institution and his efficient, all around service is in every way closely interwoven with the success of the Kearney State Normal school. He leaves with the <illegible>, respect, and very best wishes of the board of education, the faculty, and the students.

The funeral service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. V. Mountain, of Zion United Brethren church, at the Rodgers Home at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, assisted by Lee M. Moore, of the Christian church. There was a large attendance. A male quartet sang for the service. The burial was in Claysville cemetery. The pall bearers were three sons and three grandsons: Samuel Snodgrass and son, Ralph, of this place; J. W. Snodgrass and sons, Harry and Roy, of Weirton, WV; Robert G. Snodgrass, Coon Island.
Mrs. Snodgrass was born in this community 20 Jan 1832, daughter of Joel and Jane Chapman Lambourn. Both the Snodgrass and Lambourn families were pioneers in Donegal, the Snodgrass farm being purchased in 1804, when the Snodgrass family located there. The farm is now owned by John S. Holmes.
Her father for a time at least was engaged in construction work and had the contract for the brick work on the old Presbyterian church building erected in 1830, at a cost of $3,000, which stood on the site of the present more modern brick veneer church building. Mr. Lambourn had eleven men working under him.
The brick was burned in a kiln on the rear of the Christian church lot. In early life she united with Zion congregation and continued in the fellowship of that organization to the end of her life. She was united in marriage 6 Apr 1818 with Samuel Snodgrass, a farmer of Donegal twp., at West Alexander. They located on the home place at Donley, where their wedded life was spent. Mr. Snodgrass served as postmaster at Donley and provided quite a convenience for the people of that community thereby, from its institution in 1874 until his death 18 Sep 1902. She had survived her marriage almost 76 years and her span of life was just a few weeks longer than the period of the incorporation of the borough of Claysville, in which she died. There were seven children born to their union, all schooled at the White school for the common school education, and during a period when that was credited with being the banner school of the county. Mr. Snodgrass in his time was noted locally as a mathematician. Mrs. Snodgrass since the departure of her husband had lived among her children. She was of a genial disposition, and made friends in all communities where she resided. <line cut off xerox> children: Joel Snodgrass and Jennie, wife of C. C. Stull, Fresno, CA; J. 25 Jun 1926 -- (obituary, Washington Co., PA) Samuel McC. Snodgrass Buried Tuesday Afternoon.
Samuel Snodgrass, native of Ohio, for more than 60 years a resident of Buffalo twp. and one of its most substantial citizens, died at his home near Coffey's Crossing, at 9:20 a.m., Saturday, 25 Jun 1926, from illness of a fortnight due to a severe cold, only two weeks short of his 87th year. The funeral service was held at his late home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Jacob Ruble, of West Alexander, assisted by Rev. H. B. Fairman, of Taylorstown. The attendance was very large. The interment was made in Claysville cemetery.
Two other ministers assisted at the funeral, Rev. W. M. Lorimer, at the house, and Rev. Robert Ely, of near St. Louis, MO, at the grave.
Samuel McCullough Snodgrass was born near Crestline, OH, 9 Jul 1839, son of William and Margaret Chambers Snodgrass. In his youth he hauled stone for the construction of the Crestline, Columbus, and Cincinnati railroad through Crestline. Later he was sent on a mission to Washington county, about Taylorstown, when he met Miss Esther Hannah Graham, who on 10 May 1865 became his wife, the wedding ceremony being performed by Rev. J. R. Johnson, pastor of the First U. P. church, of Washington, PA. They resided a short time on the Neely farm, then were located three years on the Milt Irwin farm. For six years following they resided on the John McDowell farm. In 1875, through means secured by industry and economy purchased present home farm. The farm was then run down, fences dilapidated, yard grown up with weeds. It was quite in contrast with the modern brick residence which now stands on a beautiful site and surrounded with up to date farm buildings and well kept in every way. Much hard work endured through long hours helped the transformation. With the development of the Taylorstown oil field, the farm was put under lease and they received their allotment of the product of 17 oil wells, yielding as high as 300 to 400 barrels of day. But with the coming of wealth through oil the habits of industry were not changed, nor the neighborliness which had existed between Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass and the families of the community. To the end of life those friendships were maintained. The golden wedding was celebrated on 9 Jul 1915, when Mr. Snodgrass wore the same suit in which he was married 50 years before, still fitting fairly well and in good condition. Mrs. Snodgrass was a member of East Buffalo Presbyterian church. He walked uprightly in his community and will be missed by many friends. He was a Democrat in politics. Mrs. Snodgrass passed away 7 Nov 1915.
Five of the seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Snodgrass are living: Mrs. J. C. Kerr, of Bremen, OH; Mrs. J. C. H. Maxwell, of Hopewell twp.; Miss Ellen Nora Snodgrass and Samuel G. Snodgrass, at home; and John G. Snodgrass, of near Taylorstown. There are two grandchildren, Esther Jane Snodgrass and John Samuel Snodgrass. Two half sisters, Mrs. Amanda Roliston, San Diego, CA; and Mrs. Grace Guthrie, Mansfield, OH; and a half brother, William Snodgrass, of Seattle, WA, survive.

19 Dec 1928 -- (obituary, Washington Co., PA) Died Wednesday Evening.
The death of John Snodgrass Holmes, native and life long resident of this community, in which he was an estimable and respected citizen, occurred at the home of Mrs. Emma Ramage, Bethany Road, north of Claysville, at 6:30 o'clock, Wednesday evening, 19 Dec 1928, after a lingering illness extending over several years, aged 79 years and five months.
The funeral service was held Friday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Rev. D. N. Ciampa, in the presence of a large concourse of friends. He was assisted by Rev. R. W. Nairn, pastor of Second United Presbyterian church, Washington, and Rev. John F. Strayer, of Latrobe, PA, who was Mr. Holmes' pastor from 1910 to 1915. He delivered the address and incorporated the fine character of [the] deceased in his association with him. Burial was in Claysville cemetery.
He leaves his wife and one daughter, Edna, wife of Clarence Lindsay, of Washington, one grandson, Glenn Lindsay; two brothers, George Y. Holmes, of Claysville, and R. R. Holmes, east of Claysville, and three sisters, Mrs. M. M. Kelly, east of Claysville, and Mrs. Charles Miller and Miss Margaret J. Holmes, Claysville.
John Holmes was born in Donegal twp., west of Claysville, son of George Y. and Elizabeth Snodgrass Holmes. He followed the life of farmer industriously, though he was not of rugged strength. He was united in marriage 1 Jan 1873, with Miss Margaret Miller, of Donegal Twp. It is worthy of note that Mrs. Holmes was one of three of her family who had the privilege of observing their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes went to live on the Snodgrass farm north of Claysville, where his great grandfather, William Snodgrass, located in 1804, 25 years after Washington county was erected and 23 years after Donegal was incorporated as one of the thirteen original townships comprising the county. The historic old farm, splendidly situated, continued to be their home until just recently, when ill health required a change. In early life he was a member of Claysville Presbyterian church, but for the past 20 years or so he has been a faithful member of Zion United Brethren church. He was a citizen of upright character, respected by all who knew him. He was of sympathetic nature and knew how to speak the word of comfort in season. When affliction came into a neighbor family, he and Mrs. Holmes provided a good home and became foster parents of Will Ramage, and earlier another orphan who is pastor of the Christian church of Boise, ID--Andrew L. Chapman, once a missionary to Constantinople--found at Holmes' a home and parental care.

The descendants of William and Mary Todd Snodgrass and connections, held their annual reunion Saturday, the 15th, at Sunset Park, having picked a fine day for the event--an ideal day. There were about seventy relatives and friends present, from Osceola, NE; Steubenville, OH; Weirton, WV; Fairmont, WV; Pittsburgh, New Castle, Daisytown, Hookstown, Clinton, Houston, Woodville, Washington, Buffalo, and Claysville, PA. At noon a bountiful picnic dinner was served on tables in the pavilion. No program was arranged this year. During the afternoon the assembly was called to order by the vice president, Edward Ralston. Several of the group gave talks, and David Snodgrass, gave a solo. All stood reverently with bowed heads while Rev. G. W. Snodgrass led in prayer in memory of those who had departed, and joined in singing, "God Be With You 'Till We Meet Again." Officers elected for the ensuing year are as follows: President, Ed Ralston, Buffalo, PA; vice president, Rev. G. W. Snodgrass, Daisytown, PA; secretary-treasurer, Mrs. W. R.
