58th NC Infantry

Merritt Snipes, Sergent
Resided in Mitchell or McDowell County and was a Farmer by occupation prior to enlisting in Mitchell County at age 28, July 16, 1862 for the War.  Mustered in as Private.  Deserted on Jan. 25, 1863. "Brought Back" on February 5, 1863.  Reported present in March - June and Sept. -1863.
Promoted to Sergent in November 1863, Feb. 1864.  Reported present in Jan- April, 1864.  Wounded in the face at Resaca, GA. May 14-15, 1864. 
Returned to duty and was detailed as a wagoner prior to Sept. 1, 1864. 
The birth date I have for him is 5 Apr 1836, d. 2 Nov 1899.
His tombstone lists him as Dr. M. L. Snipes, buried in Spruce Pine Cemetery, Grassy Creek, NC

Paroled at Charlotte on May 12, 1865.
