This record on Ancestry.com shows that he was indexed as Snellen, Snelling, Snelen.

Alexander Snelling of the same service as above filed for his pension nov 12, 1872 in KY. Catherine applied for Widows pension sep 13, 1902 also in KY. Atleast with this you know he died by 1902 & Catherine was still alive.
