Marsha, you no doubt have this info by now: I do not know who Hugh's parents are. But I descend through Hugh and Margaret Marshall's daughter Mary Snelling who married Charles Crumes. Hope this helps. Char

Descendants of Hugh Snelling

Generation No. 1

1. HUGH1 SNELLING was born Abt. 1730 in Per: Ancestry of Valerie Jand Dorval, beaumont@pullman.com. He married MARGARET "PEGGY" MASENA MARSHALL, daughter of JOHN MARSHALL and ELIZABETH MARKHAM. She was born 1745 in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County Virginia per: John Marshall's will probated 26 May 1752.

I am a descendant of Hugh Snelling, who lived in Fauquier County, Virginia, and married by 1761 Margaret Marshall, daughter of John Marshall "of the Forest." Hugh was probably born in the 1830s, near the time of Benjamin and John, sons of Aquilla Snelling and second wife Margaret Allen, who he married in July 1830 (his first wife was Mary Goar). Hugh, closely connected with the two brothers in proximity and in legal matters, may have been a third brother, but I can neither prove nor disprove it. He doesn't appear to a member of any other Virginia Snelling family that I have found. Unless he was a cousin down from New England, I tend to think of him as that brother.
My descent from Hugh is through his son William, who married Jemima Scott, about whom my recent genealogy is written. Then my gr-gr-grandparents Benjamin and Frances Burrus Snelling, Addison and Frances Rebecca Snelling Draper, Charles and Loisa Draper Martin, and James A and Madge Elizabeth Martin McMillen, my parents.
The Snelling name is fairly common in England, so there is a high probability of our Snellings coming from there, and there is no suggestion in the record of any other homeland. Sorry I can't take them back before their arrival. Even sorrier I can't conclusively tie Hugh to Aquilla.
Cheers, Jim

Jim. I am working on the Hugh Snelling from Washington and Breckenridge CO KY. Is this the same one? I have a daughter Mary who married Charles Crume of the same counties. Do you have a source for the Marshal marriage? If so this may be the Aunt of the John Marshal who was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Your help would be appreciated.

Yes, this is the same Hugh Snelling. Wulfeck's _Marriages of Some Virginia Residents_ gives Margaret "Peggy" Marshall marrying ____ Snelling, and _Genealogy of the Marshall Family_ shows her married to ____ Smellan. Margaret's mother was Elizabeth Markham, whose will spells Snelling correctly and refers to Hugh and Margaret's oldest child, Elizabeth.
Margaret's parents were Elizabeth Markham and John Marshall "of the forest." One of their sons, and her brother, was Col Thomas Marshall, later well known in the Revolution. He was superintendent of Lord Fairfax's estate and may have been responsible for bringing Margaret to Leed's Manor. There it was possible for her to meet Hugh Snelling, who was registered on two or three occasions as living at Leed's Manor.
One of Hugh Snelling's granddaughters, by son William, was Margaret Marshall Snelling. She married John Thomas Ricketts and ended up in California, a '49er.
One of Col Thomas Marshall's sons was the early Chief Justice of the United States John Marshall. Margaret (Marshall) Snelling was his aunt.

Jim Thanks for the quick reply. I am rapidly getting up to speed on this branch of my wife;s family. It is obvious that you are the resident expert so it is very nice to meet you. Her 4th grandfather Charles Crume married Mary Beth Snelling in Nelson CO KY on Jan. 1, 1795. Ralph Crume, Sr. gave suriety. The 1810 Census shows Hugh and Ralph Crume Sr.*( Charle's father) and Ralph Jr. living side by side. in Breckenrige CO. The entire Crume family was in the process of leaving Viriginia and entering KY. Ralph Jr. married A. Lincoln's Aunt, Mary Lincoln. Do you have any information on Williams siblings as if Mary Beth is in this line she would be William's sister? Mary Beth died after 1830 in Clay CO IL as Charles and his son Henry just kept moving west. Again thanks and if any of this interests you a genealogy report is just a click away. Charles Crume and Mary Snelling. .

E-mail from Jim McMillen of 3-14-2003
My note to Joe Ewell:__

It is generally accepted that Mary Snelling, who married Charles Crume
in Nelson County, Kentucky, was the daughter of Hugh Snelling and
Margaret Marshall. Hugh was on the rent rolls of Leeds Manor, Fauquier
County, Virginia, in 1770 and 1777. Hugh is recorded in Shenandoah
County, Virginia, (which had broken off from Fauquier County) as late as
1785, but is also shown as early as 1784 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
He was closely associated with John and Benjamin Snelling, sons of
Aquilla Snelling and Margaret Allen, and may have been another son, but
I haven't been able to prove it except by inference.

Margaret Marshall was a daughter of John Marshall "of the forest" and
sister of Col Thomas Marshall, who was superintendent of 250+ square
mile Leed's Manor and other properties of Lord Fairfax, proprietor of
the Northern Neck of Virginia. One of Thomas's sons was John Marshall,
the famous early Chief Justice of the United States.

Hugh's son William Snelling married Sarah Scott. They were my 4th
gr-grandparents and I have done a book on them and their descendants,
with a little on their ancestors.

Margaret "Peggy" Basham married (1) James Cox4 April 24, 1813 in Breckenridge CO KY5,6. He died in 1817 in Breckenridge CO KY7. She married (4) Martin King11 November 05, 1844 in Hamilton CO. IL12. He was born 178813, and died Aft. 1850.

In gene pool records I just found a record of Margaret Peggy Basham marrying James Cox in Breckenridge CO KY 4-24-1813 which would make her 17.

Margaret was wife of James per probate records of James' estate.

We know Henry Crume married Margaret "Peggy" Basham in 5-1818. We also know he had himself appointed guardian of the two Cox girls, Mary and Cassandra, in 1821.
This means she was married four times. Interesting. Rick
