I am confused. Some of the earlier messages on this forum state that John Allen and Hannah Snelling married 7/13/1786 in Bath County, VA.
I have in front of me a copy of the marriage license, sent to me by the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Fauquier County, found in their Fauquier County Marriages, Volume 1, page 178.
The marriage license is dated July 13 1786: John Allen, Jr and Leander Murphy are bound to Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia for the intended marriage of John Allen to Hannah Snelling.
There is also a note with the bond written on the 13th of July 1786 and signed by Elizabeth Snelling, requesting that a license be granted to Mr. John Allen, Jr. for a marriage between himself and "my Daughter Hannah".
How does Bath County, VA come into this marriage? Is there a marriage record there?
This Hannah was not yet 21 years of age since she had to have a note from her mother in order to marry. She was probably closer to 16-17 years of age, the typical age at which they "married the girls off."
I hope someone who is researching this line can help me out on the descendants of John and Hannah Allen.
