My mom’s family history seems to center in South River Township, Augusta County, VA. South River Township was also called District one (in 1860) and District two and a half (in 1850). Did the name change or did they move? Towns that I see mentioned are Sherando and Lyndhurst. Older records show the Snead/Sneed part of the family in Nelson County VA.
My grandmother was Amelia Ruth Vera (Ruth) Hyden (B: 08-23-1896, D: 09-29-1973) and my grandfather was Hendy Maurey Snead Sr (B: 02-14-1895, D: 05-26-1947). Henry and Ruth were married 4-11-1917. Ruth Hyden’s siblings included Jennie (who died as an infant), John (who died at the age of 29 in a sawmill accident) Ada (1903), and seven half siblings from her father’s first marriage (Mary, JoBelle, Arthur, Vogul, Ransom (Ramson?, Ranson?), Beluah, and Roy)
Amelia Ruth Vera Hyden’s parents were David Marshall Hyden (B: 07-07-1854, D:05-01-1934) and Hannah Susan Smith (B: 06-03-1863, D: 04-17-1912). David Marshall and Hannah Susan were married 09-20-1893. David Marshall sibling was Mary Catherine (1852, died at 6). David Marshall had several half siblings from his father’s second wife Hester A. E. Balsley (Alvorado Jessie (died as an infant), Hannah J. (1860), Josie Arnold (1863), and Solon Byron (1874).
Hannah Susan Smith was David Marshall Hyden’s second wife after Sarah Fellers. Hannah Susan siblings included Joseph T (1855), David C. (1858), Barbara E. (1859), and Catherine. Hannah Susan’s sister, Catherine, married David Marshall after Hannah Susan died.
I believe Hannah Susan Smith’s parents were Harvey Smith (B: circa 1827, D: circa 1863) and Emily Farmer (B: __-__-____, D: __-__-____). Harvey and Emily were married 02-02-1854. Harvey Smith, according to family lore, died at the Battle of Seven Pines (Fair Oaks) after only a few weeks of being a private in the confederate service. HSS was, reportedly, only a few days old when her mother heard the news of his death. Now either news traveled very slowly (Battle of Seven Pines was fought in 1862 and they did not hear about it until 1863) or it was a completely different battle. We have a picture of Harvey Smith in his confederate uniform holding a long knife. Does anybody have any confederate war records or know what happened to Harvey Smith?
Harvey Smith’s parents may have been Ralph Smith (B: __-__-____, D: __-__-____) and Barbara Smith (B: __-__-____, D: __-__-____). Barbara Smith’s maiden name may have been Barbara Winegardner. No other information is known about Harvey Smith or his ancestors.
Emily Farmer’s dad may have been Jeremiah Farmer (B: __-__-____, D: __-__-____). No other information is known about Emily Farmer or her ancestors. Does anybody have any information about the Smiths, Winegardners, or Farmers?
As far as the Hyden Family goes, David Marshall Hyden was the son of David Joseph (or Joseph David) Hyden (B: __-__-____, D: 11-19-1898) and Sarah Jane Fifer (B: 05-07-1835, D: 10-14-1855). David Marshall and Sarah Jane were married 01-07-1852. David Joseph’s siblings included Jane, Ellen, Martha Catherine, Ann, and Sarah. David Joseph (and then David Marshall) operated the Hyden Mill in Sherando, VA.
David Joseph Hyden was the son of Joseph Hyden and (I possibly) Anna Maria Susana “Mary” (Frenger) Engleman. Joseph’s wife’s information is highly speculative (married 09-30-1828).
Joseph Hyden was the sun of Joshua Hyden and (again another highly speculative guess) Martha Chesnut (married 02-02-1796).
Joshua Hyden may be the son of Henry Hyden and Lydia Hoskins.
Henry Hyden may be the son of William Hyden and Mary ________. If anybody has any clear Hyden ancestry, I would love to hear it.
My grandfather, Hendy Maurey Snead Sr., was the son of Joseph Calvin Snead (B: 01-06-1868, D: 03-17-1950) and Melissa Alice Bridge (B: 11-19-1872, D: 05-21-1939). Joseph Calvin and Melissa Alice were married circa 1891. Hendy Maurey’s siblings included Callie Jane, Tucker, Elmer (Buck), Nora, Sally (died as an infant), Emmitt, Lydia, Harmon Wilson, Ruth Lester, and Margaret.
Joseph Calvin Snead was the son of John M. (possibly Matthew) Snead (B: 02-05-1832, D: 09-09-1910) and Lucinda Demastis (B: circa 1926, D: __-__-____). John M. may have been a captain in the Civil War although I have no documentation to prove this. Joseph Calvin’s siblings included James Sterling C. (1851), Sallie Ann, William A. (Jimmy) (1861), John Edward (1863), and Ada H. (1872).
John M. Snead may have been the son of Cary Snead/Sneed and, possibly, Dicey Rousey. I have not confirmed the John M.-- Cary connection. According to family mythology, Cary was a volunteer in the war of 1812. He enlisted in Waynesboro and was under col. Coleman in the 28th infantry 1st army division Company C. He received a land grant in Nelson County, VA (where he was born) in 1852 for his service in the war. The Cary war information may be correct, I just don’t know if I am related to him. Cary Snead had two wives, Lucy Hatter and Elizabeth M. Fitzgerald. No other information is known about either of these wives.
Lucinda Demastis may have been the daughter of John Demastis although this is speculative information. Demastis may also be spelled Demastas, Demasters, or a whole myriad of other ways. Lucinda had only two brothers who survived the Civil war Luke and Jerry. It is unknown if there were other siblings.
Melissa Alice Bridge was the daughter of Joseph S. Bridge (B: 04, __, 1860, D: __-__-____) and Sarah (Sally) Jane Falls (B: 05, __, 1852, D: __-__-____) . Melissa Alice’s siblings included Jessie, Ida Belle (1870), Josie (1881), Ott(ie) (1893), Ina, Massie, and Addie (1880).
Sarah (Sally) Jane Falls may be the daughter of Elijah and Catherine Falls, but this is just guesswork. No other information is known about Sarah (Sally) Jane Falls or her ancestors. Joseph S. and Melissa Alice were married circa 1867.
Joseph S. Bridge may be the son of Jessie Bridge (B: __-__-____, D: __-__-____) and Mildred J. Bridge (B: __-__-____, D: __-__-____). The Joseph S. – Jessie, Mildred Bridge connection has not been confirmed.
Can anyone help me flesh out, or confirm my mom’s family tree?
