I am very familiar with the Sneed family you mention. Stephen Sneed (10 Feb 1756 - March of 1821) was a resident of Granville County, NC. He marired Mary williams (10 Jul 1761-03 Aug 1826); she was the daughter of William Williams one of the original investors of the Transylvania Land Company whose purchase would later become the county of Henderson, Kentucky. Stephen was a wealthy planter, merchant and local politician. He raised a large familyy and Albert Gallatin was his eighth child; he married Maria Frances Bullock.

Stephen is the son of Capt. Samuel Sneed (1723-1806). Samuel came to Granville County from Virginia (probably from Caroline County via one of the Southside counties). He settled there at least by 1761, probably a bit earlier. He married Jane Dudley, the daughter of Thomas Dudley who was originally from Caroline County, Virgina, but who settled in Amelia County by 1768. His fate is unknown, but his son William lived in that part of the county that became Nottoway. He had a daugther Mary, but she married Samuel Jeter and later settled in Wake County, NC; though her children settled in Granville. Samuel Sneed raised a large family including: Stephen; Hannah (married Samuel Farrar Williams); Philip (married Jemiah Ann Mitchell); John (married Susanna Redd); Nancy (married Daniel Gooch); Dudley; Thomas (married Nancy Parker); Lemuel (married Elizabeth Redd). Samuel and Jane settled on the Flat River in what is now Person county, NC just near the Orange county border. A few of their children settled in Granville. Dudley's children claimed his Revolutionary land patents in Georgia and Philip went to Salisbury, NC. Many of these people's descendants went to the region of Henderson, KY; Memphis, TN; and Mississippi.

There is a great deal of documented evidence of these families in Granville and Person County that most genealogies ignored or did not have access to when they were written, so don't assume every stone has been turned over.

I am very interested in any family documents and references to Samuel Sneed who is my ancestor through his daugther Nancy Gooch.
