Thanks for your response but if you carefully read the following items; the first is on another Genforum SNEED message; AND I hope Nova doesn't mind my quoting her and the second message is from an email I received from Bert Highet on Saturday. Bert is the author of the BENBROOK book.
Notes for James M. Sneed:
>From Nova A Lemons<firstname.lastname@example.org>
"My research shows that there were 2 James M. Sneeds of Hamilton county, Illinois. On the 1840 Hamilton Co. census, James Sneed (b c1810-1820) was listed with a wife (b 1810-1820), one male child and one female child, both born c1835-1840. He was the only James Sneed listed on this census. They were not on the 1850 census. The 1860 Hamilton co. census shows:
335-335 SNEED, James M. 45 KY(b. 1815)
Elizabeth 40 TN(b 1820)
Malinda J. 20 IL (b 1840)
Moses M. 14 IL (b 1846) SIMONS,William R. 14 AR(b 1846)
Sarah A. 12 AR Martha E. 11 (or 10) AR Henry 9 AR Azariah 7 AR Owen F. 5 AR John R. 2 IL
"The oldest son (and twin of Malinda?), James M. Sneed, Jr. (born abt 1840, IL) was living with his wife Matilda Miller (married 23 July 1859 in Hamilton Co.) and her family.
"Now we focus on the other James M. Sneed whom I have identified as the son of James R. and Lucy Sneed. Although James Madison Sneed married Nancy A. Shoemaker on 10 Aug 1843 in Hamilton County, and lived there for many
years, I have not yet found a connection between his family and the other Sneeds of Hamilton Co. James M. was living in Gallatin Co, IL on 1850 census with his wife Nancy and their two children (Marshall and Joshua),
next door to his parents and siblings. It is possible the reason James went to Hamilton Co, was because of his job and/or Nancy's family. He could have gone there before his parents moved to IL from KY and then joined them as they settled in Gallatin Co. prior to 1850.
"Eventually James Madison Sneed moved his family back to Hamilton Co. where they were on the 1860 census. This record shows two separate James M. Sneeds living in Hamilton co. in 1860. See above for the 1860 census
listing of James M., son of Elijah, with his family. The family of James M., son of James R. Sneed, is listed as:
905-906 SNEED,James M. 43 VA (b. 1817) Nancy A. 43 VA (b. 1817) Marshall L. 13 IL (b. 1847 Joshua 12 IL James R. 9 IL Charles 4 IL
"As a reminder, all of James R. and Lucy Sneed's children, except for the last child, were born in VA prior to their move to KY in late 1830's. Elijah and Mary were already settled in KY by 1811 and all of their children were born in KY. It is not likely that they would have gone to VA where only one child was born then returned to KY before the birth of their next child. Elijah was born in NC.
"Nancy (Shoemaker) Sneed died 1882 in Benton, Franklin, IL, where James' parents and siblings moved to from Gallatin co. prior to 1860 census and James Madison Sneed died 1884 in Hamilton Co. Both James and Nancy are
buried in Benton near the graves of his mother Lucy and other family members in the Sneed Family Plot.
"Nothing else is known about James, son of Elijah, and his family. It is possible that he was married twice, first to Sarah Blackburn on 7 Nov 1836 in Allen co., KY where his family lived. Sarah was probably with him on the 1840 census and the mother of his three children, James M., Malinda J. and
Moses M. They may have lived elsewhere (not southern IL) during the 1850 census. After her death, James married second to Elizabeth circa 1858-1860(their marriage record not found in Hamilton co.) and they returned to Hamilton co. prior to 1860 census. Elizabeth probably married first to Mr. Simons, the father of the Simons children on the 1860 census. This family was not on the 1870 census of Hamilton Co."
Children of James Sneed and Sarah BLACKBURN are: 30 i. Malinda J.3 Sneed1, born Abt. 1840 in Hamilton, Illinois.
31 ii. James M. Sneed2, born Abt. 1840 in Hamilton, Illinois. He married
Matilda Miller3 23 July 1859 in Hamilton, Illinois.
32 iii. Moses M. Sneed4, born Abt. 1846 in Hamilton, Illinois."
FROM BERT HIGHET:
"I can help you a lot on the James Madison Sneed, Sr. line and his two marriages to Sarah Blackbourn and Elizabeth Lawrence - Simmons. We've always spelled the Sim(m)ons name with 2 m's. You have done some good work and have got most everything correct. James and Sarah had the three children: James M. Jr, Malinda Jane and Hosea Moses. Sarah died young. James and Elizabeth (assumed widow) had six children: Sarah Angeline, Martha E., Henry Mitchell, Azariah, your Owen Thomas, and John R. William Riley was Elizabeth's from her m. to Simmons."
As stated by Nova there were TWO James Sneeds on the census, and I do believe that you have gotten them confused.
