Susan,
Our family descends from Elijah P. Sneed and Mary Benbrook through their son John B. Sneed(1818-1862) and his daughter Nancy (1851-1912). We have a copy of the Sneed Chronicle book so when I saw your posting I looked up the James Sneed info in the book. It appears to conflict with your theory of descent.
Page 112:
(4) James R. Sneed,4th child of Elijah P. and Mary (Polly) Benbrook Sneed, was born about 1817 in Virginia, according to the census of 1860 of Hamilton County, Ill. The death certificate of one of his sons says he was born in Rockbridge,County, Virginia. We wrote to the County Clerk of that county, but their records do not go back that far. James was supposed to have been married two times. The Marriage Records of Allen County, Kentucky shows that James Sneed and Sarah Blackburn were married on November 7, 1836. This might not be the same James. On August 10, 1843 he and Nancy Shoemaker were married in Hamilton County, Illinois. She was born in Virginia in 1817. James was a blacksmith by trade. In the census of 1860 he owned $1,200.00 in real estate and $450.00 in personal property. We have been unable to learn when James R. died. He is buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery at McLeansboro, Illinois. There is no marker at his grave. His wife, Nancy Shoemaker Sneed, died March 3, 1882. James and Nancy Shoemaker Sneed were the parents of 4 children as follows.
It then lists Marshall L.Sneed,Joshua Shoemaker Sneed, James R. Sneed, and Charles H. Sneed as the 4 children.
I know the book doesn't site sources but I believe most of the family data was taken from family members.
May I suggest checking the 1860 Ham Co IL census. The Sneed Chronicle claims the census lists James b in Va. Your census data shows KY.
Just thought I'd see if I could add anything to your research.
Barbara.
