Funeral Held for General Sneed at Lawton
Funeral services for General RICHARD ALEXANDER SNEED, “Grand Old Man” of Oklahoma and one time Gainesville citizen, were held at the home of his son, FRANK B. SNEED, Lawton, Oklahoma, Monday afternoon with burial there. General Sneed died at age of 91 years Sunday morning after a stroke of paralysis.
Born in Mississippi in 1845, he was reared in Madison County, Tennessee and at age 16 years, enlisted for service with the Confederate Army at Canton, Mississippi. On May 3, 1863 he was wounded and captured at the battle of Fredericksburg and was recaptured by his own comrades two days later.
Disabled for infantry service, he was appointed ordinance sergeant of his regiment in 1864. At Sailer’s Creek in Virginia, he was one of several thousand Confederates capture and sent to Point Lookout prison, Maryland. He was discharged June 30, 1865. In 1874 he was elected circuit clerk of Madison County, Tenn, serving in that capacity for eight years. He came to Texas a few years later and in 1885 went to Indian Territory. He engaged in business at Fort Sill until 1890 when he moved to Pauls Valley, later he moved to Lawton, and through his influence, had the mineral springs at Sulphur made a national institution.
At Lawton he served as register of deeds for Comanche County, was secretary of state for two four year terms and was national commander of the United Confederate Veterans for one term. Surviving are three sons, FRANK S. SNEED of Lawton, R. B. SNEED of Jackson, Tennessee, and L. B. SNEED of Bristow; three daughters, Mrs. MARY LOVELL and Mrs. FRED SNYDER of Lubbock, Texas and Miss SUSAN SNEED of Oklahoma City.

FRANK S. SNEED
Relatives in Gainesville received news Saturday morning of the death of FRANK S. SNEED at his home in Lawton, Oklahoma. He had been ill several days of pneumonia. Funeral services will be held in Lawton Monday afternoon. Mr. Sneed, son of the late R. A. SNEED, who died recently, spent his boyhood in Gainesville. His father passed away at the home of Frank Sneed at Lawton last month. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss LULA CAMPBELL, and one son FRANK Jr.
