Dear Doris,

This is very, very helpful to me, and solves a family mystery--what became of Martha, daughter of Wm. H. Snead and his wife Caroline Scoggins. From all you say, Martha Ann Snead who married John Huggins is obviously Wm. H. Snead's daughter. This explains to me why, in 1891, when his heirs disposed of his property, a Martha Huggins appears in the deed selling the property.

I have been puzzled by the Martha Huggins who m. Jasper Huggins, son of Daniel Huggins and Sarah Truluck, and had been mistakenly trying to make her match Martha Ann Snead. How does the John Huggins who married Martha Ann Snead fit into the Huggins family?

Everything fits: the fact that this Martha named children Caroline and William, that she lived in Ringgold (where Wm. H. Snead first settled in 1848 when he came to LA) and then Coushatta, where he later owned a store, etc.

I'd love to swap information with you. The Martha Ann who was dau. of Wm. H. Snead and Caroline Scoggins was b. abt. 1839 in GA, per the 1850 census. She would probably have been b. in Greene Co., where I find Wm. H. Snead up to 1838, or perhaps in Randolph Co., where he lived until he left GA for LA in 1848.

Thanks for sending this information, and very happy to exchange more information about these families with you. If you'd like to email me, please do so at
