In the 13th Century, the von Lunkhofen family, near Zuerich, Switzerland, began using the surname Schnewli, which essentially means snowy. (Schnee is snow in German.) Over the years the spelling has varied to Snewli, Schnebli, Schneebeli and Snavely. In addition to the Elizabeth Washburn book, there is an earlier book called "Die Schnewli von Affoltern a. A." by Ernst Albert Lincke, which has information on the origins of this family in Switzerland (for those who can read German).
