John Snapp 3/11/06
Thank you John, I think I am finally starting to understand this Snapp family puzzle. At least part of it.
If I understand you right, Johannes (1695-1762, m to Barbara Dutt) and Lorentz (1711- 1771, m to Elizabeth Euler) were brothers and the sons of Lorentz (1669-1732) and Anna Catherine Haber Schnepp(1670-1725) and they were the two Schnepp/Snapp brothers that arrived in Philadelphia in 1733.
Lawrence (1723-1781) was the son of Johannes and Barbara Dutt Schnepp. He married Margaret Stephens (have also seen a middle name of Gaines) and they had a son named Lawrence. Did they also have a son, Philip, that married Catherine Hockman before 1776 and then Sarah Reader in 1810?
The family I am researching goes from Philip and Catherine Hockman; their son Abraham married to Sarah Miller; their son Jacob B (born 1806 in Strasburg, VA) married to Rebecca Grandstaff; their daughter Sarah Elizabeth Snapp (born 5 May 1841 in Edinburg, VA and died 21 Mar 1915 in Mount Jackson, Shenandoah Co, VA) married to Casper Funkhouser and their son, George Snapp Funkhouser, born 2 Jan 1876 in Mount Jackson and died 19 Sept 1941 in Hagerstown, Washington Co, MD. George Snapp Funkhouser was the great grandfather of my children on their mother's side. She is a Funkhouser and was born in Hagerstown.
George Snapp Funkhouser married Edith Alma Snapp, 3 Jul 1902, in Winchester, Frederick Co, VA. Edith Alma was the daughter of Marcus Jackson Snapp and Zora Virginia Gray and was born in Winchester 14 Oct 1876 and died 6 Jun 1961 in Hagerstown.
I am trying to find how Lawrence Snapp (1711-1771), the ancestor of George Snapp Funkhouser, is related to the Snapp ancestors of Marcus Jackson Snapp. The only information I have so far is from the obituary of Marcus posted in message #613 on this board. Family notes show that Marcus's father, Joseph was born and died in VA and married Rebecca unknown.
In your message #616 (in reply to my inquiry on #613), you thought the person that wrote the obituary on Marcus Jackson was in error. I do not know as all I have to go by is the copy of the obituary that I have. In it the writer claims to have seen the document that day. See the two paragraphs below from the obituary:
"The deceased was a member of one of the oldest families of the Shenandoah Valley, his paternal great grandfather, John Snapp, having been apointed and duly commissioned collector of all the rentals and other landed revenues in the Northern Neck of Virginia, by Lord Fairfax, the commission, WHICH WAS SEEN TODAY BY THE WRITER bearing date of May 21, 1777. John Snapp was held in high esteem and had reposed in him the utmost confidence by Lord Fairfax, the noted Scotch Baron of Careron."
"The paternal grandfather of Marcus J Snapp was Lawrence Snapp, who at one time owned most, if not all, that part of Shenandoah County, north of Tom's Brook, which was devoted exclusively to the breeding of high-grade horses for the eastern markets, and it is perhaps due to that enterprise inaugurated by Lawrence Snapp that has given Virginia horses the name they now enjoy as being second to none in quality."
Thanks again for all the help and if you have more information that would put this into perspective, that would be great.
