Thanks for your reply. I think you may be right about the name william smyth being common. Ah well- it was worth a try. Sometimes these long shots pay off. As Tyrone is near Londonderry i thought maybe..
Our William Smyth great great grandfather had a son william also, born in 1842. The son came to Australia in 1860 with his sister Rebecca and the rest of their family including William the elder and his wife and 4 other kids came over in 1865. Your family would no doubt have some awareness of this if there had been a connection.
You may have to go to Ireland to chase it up.
