Susan,
As far as I know Nathanael and Mary had four children, namely: John christened 24th June 1733, John and Mary, twins, 23rd June 1734 and Nathanael 2nd February 1736/37.All four children being christened at Hastings St. Clements.Only the second John survived infancy, the first was buried on 21st June 1733, Mary on 4th July 1734 and Nathanael on 26th April 1739, all burials being at All Saints Hastings.I suspect that Nathanael senior pre-deceased his son of the same name as the marriage of Mary Smithers and Lawrence Holiday is registered at Hastings St. Clements on 24th April 1739.
Nathanael senior was christened at Cranbrook in 1707, the son ofanother Nathanael Smither and Anne Bernard who were married at Mountfield, Sussex in 1706, he was the eldest often children. So far I’ve counted six Nathanael Smithers, all of whom are related to each other, in Sussex and Kentand an apparently unrelated individual in Surrey in the 19th C.The name also occurs in America in the 18th C., a fact that may or may not be co-incidence.Any information that you may have on this line would be much appreciated.
Best Wishes,
Michael J. Smither. (2nd cousin 8 times removed of Nathanael Smither of Cranbrook)
