Alex, the child that was listed as Joel M Smitherman age 8 in 1850, and 18 in 1860 census records is not the same one that you have listed. According to the estate records of both his parents his name was actually Joseph Madison Smitherman. I don't know why the census taker listed him as Joel, and those 2 census records are the only places that he is ever listed as Joel. In 1870 he was listed in the census as Jo Smitherman. Everywhere else he is listed as either Joseph or Joseph M. His mother apparently named him after her brother whose name was Joseph Madison Davis.

I don't know who the Joel Smitherman is that you have listed as marrying a Hettie ____ and having children: Abel J, Jesse J. and Richard A belonged to. The names Abel J Smitherman and Richard A Smitherman from Texas does sound familiar but I can't place why at the moment.

The children Martha b. ca 1850, J.D.R. b. ca 1852, and Starling G. b. ca 1854, were not Smitherman's they were Ray's. Rachel had 3 children by her 1st husband Wyatt Smitherman and 3 more children by her 2nd husband Luke Rea/Ray. One of the Ray children died after the 1860 census and before Rachel herself died in 1866 according to her estate.

5 January 1837 Bibb Co., AL. WYATT SMITHERMAN married RACHEL DAVIS. [Marriage Book "D" page 50]

Wyatt Smitherman was the son of Samuel W. Smitherman b. 1789 NC & Sarah Lowdermilk. Wyatt was listed in the NC estate of his grandfather John Harrison Lowdermilk as the son of Sarah Lowdermilk Smitherman deceased dau. of John Harrison Lowdermilk and husband Samuel. Wyatt died in 1845 in Bibb Co., AL. Esate - Bibb Co. Administrative Records Book "E" pages: 425, 453, 592 & 593.

RACHEL DAVIS b. ca 1819 was the daughter of HARDY DAVIS who died in Bibb Co., AL.{ After the death of her mother Hardy married 2nd to MARGARET [SMITHERMAN]GOODWIN on 8 November 1836 in Bibb Co., Al. Margaret was the widow of Willie R Goodwin, with whom she had had 1 child Harriett Ann Rebecca Goodwin.} Rachel died 1866 Bibb Co., AL.

2 March 1850 Bibb Co., AL. Mrs. Rachel Smitherman married Luke Rea.

12 October 1852 Bibb Co., Al. - Luke Rea moved the court for letters of guardianship on the estate of Hardy M Smitherman, Bodecia A C Smitherman, and Joseph Madison Smitherman, minor heirs of Wyatt Smitherman deceased.

April 1858 Bibb Co., Al. Rolley Smitheran [brother of Wyatt] became guardian of Hardy Smitherman, Bodecia A C Smitherman and Joseph Madison Smitherman.

15 November 1866 Bibb Co., Al. - Loose Paper files - Estate of Rachel Ray, C D McRimmon administering the esate listed the heirs of Rachel as follows:" 1. Joseph Smitherman 2, Boudecian Smitherman both children of said deceased & both live in Bibb County Ala. 3. the children of Hardy Smitherman deceased who was a son of said deceased to wit - who names are not known & who live in Bibb County, Ala & one minor 4. Martha Ray & ____ Ray both minors & live with Hardy Davis in Perry County Ala."

NOTE: Rachel also had a brother named Hardy Davis who did live in Perry County, AL.

1. HARDY M SMITHERMAN b. ca 1837 Bibb Co., Al. married 22 Nov. 1859 Bibb Co., Al. to Susan E Dean [dau of Martha "Mariah" Wilson Dean]. Hardy died before 1866 in Bibb Co., Al. In 1860 US Bibb County Alabama Census records there are 2 entries for him. One is under H M Smitherman & the other he is listed as Hardy. The only reason I can find for this is perhaps he went to visit his mother at the time the census was taken in July and was back at his home when the census taker came there. He was listed as the same age in both and there does not appear to have been another Hardy Smitherman. Children: Martha "Belle" Smitherman b. ca 1862 and Hardy M Smitheramn b. ca 1864 who married Ada Lee Shaw on 5 Feb. 1899 Coosa Co., AL. Susan E Dean Smitherman was born 10 April 1840 and died 4 July 1874 Bibb Co., Al. buried at Rehobeth Church Cemetery several graves down from her mother.

2. BODECIA A C SMITHERMAN b. ca 1840 no other information past the 1866 estate of her mother. Something that is interesting is the fact that Rachel Davis Smitherman Ray had a half sister whose name was Bodecia Ann Catherine Davis and she married William M Smitherman.

3. JOSEPH MADISON SMITERMAN b. ca 1842. Marriage Record - Joseph M Smitherman to Sarah A Whattley 28 May 1861 book E-288 married by Judge Jackson Gardner Bibb Co., Al. Sarah A "Sally" Whatley was the daughter of Ranson Whatley and Hannah Smitherman [sister of Wyatt Smitherman]. CHILDREN: 1. Jane Smitherman b. 1865 Bibb Co., Al. 2. Irina "Rina" Smitherman b. Dec 1868 Bibb Co., AL. In 1910 she was listed as single in the household of her brother Dalton Smitherman 3. Theodore/Adora b. 1869/70 listed in one census as male and the next as female. 4. Doyal L Smitherman b. March 1872. Married 20 Feb. 1898 Chilton Co., AL. to Sallie McArrell. Died after 1930 had one child a dau. Doy A who married Eddie Moson. and 5. Seaborn Dalton Smitheramn b. March 1877 Bibb Co., Al. married 26 Sept 1898 to Alice Cullern in Chilton Co., AL. Census.
1900 US Chilton Co., Al. Census Ed 31 Sheet 8 Beat 7 Maplesville
Dalton Smitherman 23 male March 1877
Alice 19 wife Oct. 1880
Lyman 4/12 son July 1899
Sallie 58 Mother March 1841

4. Martha Ray & ______ Ray [the name was left blank for this child on the original record. I did not find these children in the 1870 census records to determine which child this was.] both minors & live with Hardy Davis in Perry County Ala. [this Hardy Davis was the brother of Rachel not her father]

NOTE: 1860 Census listed:
Martha Ray b. 1850
J D R Ray b. 1852 male
Starling G b. 1854 male

Hope this helps.
