I am amazed at the amount of information on the Internet regarding the Smitherman Family. I had no idea there was so many of US! I just can't find my branch of the tree.

Recently I came across an old handwritten Pedigree Chart one of my relative began years ago, well before the Internet. This chart had several names, some dates but, little else. Upon searching the Internet, I have been amazed at the amount of information and stories I've read regarding the Smithermans. My father, James Earl Smitherman of Jones AL, age 73, is very interested in his family history, he doesn't do computers, so I'm trying to compile an accurate account of our ancestry for him. Within the past week, I've become obsessed with this project!

I am uncertain of the accuracy of this chart I have, it traces back to Samuel Smythyman and Pheobe Johnson but as I searched the Internet and Smitherman sites, I can't seem to locate my branch of the tree. I get confused around Jesse Smitherman b.1808 married to Dorothy "Polly" Gardner. According to this Pedegree Chart, Jesse and Polly's son Thomas Smitherman b.1830, Bibb Co. AL, married May 2, 1853 in Bibb Co. AL, a Juliann Smitherman b. May 1833/34, NC. (Juliann' parents were a Thomas Smitherman b. 1788 and Elizabeth Lowdermilk.)

Thomas and Juliann should be my gg-grand parents according to the chart I have. Their son (whom I can't seem to find listed anywhere but, I did find where his tombstone at Rehobeth Cemetery had been photographed.) Joseph Lafayette Smitherman b. Oct 21.1867 d. July 11, 1945, Bibb Co. AL, married Gabriella "Della" Smitherman b. Mar 10, 1864, d.Jan. 16, 1915. Bibb Co. AL. (Della's parents were John Smitherman, b. 1838/39 and Paralee Latham, b. 1843/47).

Joseph Layfette and Gabriella "Della" Smitherman are my g-grandparents. As I understand it, they had six or more children. I believe they were all born in or around Bibb Co, AL. I am uncertain of their birth order:

Vittie Smitherman married Herman Shelton
Ethel Smitherman (never married)
Lizzie Smitherman married Rube Argo
Arthur Smitherman (Unknown)
Ollie Smitherman (Unknown)
Clifton Thomas Smitherman, b. Dec 12, 1899 - d. Mar 1968, married on July 23 or 31, 1924, at West Blocton Court House, Minnie Lee Johnson b. Sep 15, 1906 - d. Oct. 1985.

Clifton Thomas and Minnie Lee, my grandparents had seven living children, 23 Grandchildren, 26 G-grandchildren and approx. 9 GG-grandchildren.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: After his mother "Della Smitherman died, my grandfather, Clifton Thomas Smitherman, at age 13, moved into the home of Jonathan Levingston Johnson and Effie McNeal Robinson/Roberson-Johnson and their children, Minnie Lee (my grandmother) Linne, Blanche, Dan, Gavan and Jessie. Effie McNeal Robinson/Roberson Johnson is the daughter of Mordaci Roberson, b 1807 and Caroline Bullock b. 1842. Mordaci Roberson was the first and only Probate Judge of Baker Co, which is now Chilton Co.

I would appreciate any additional information on the siblings of Joseph Lafayette Smitherman and his ancestry. As well as, any information on the Jonathan Levingston Johnson and Mordecai Roberson families or who/where I my go for additional facts. Please email me at

Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!
