Dan, you might spell your name with an "e" but, you are a SMITHERMAN, going back to England, and Eastern Cherokee.

I'm sure my Great-Grandfather, Jesse Monroe Smitherman, b. 1859,Greene Co., IL, was named after your Jesse Monroe Smitherman/Smetherman, b. 1851, Greene Co, IL.

James had a brother, Thomas, who is my gg-grandfather. Their father, Jesse/Jasper was born in TN, and not NC. This was told to me by Margie Smitherman. You can contact her for the details.

Jesse Jasper Smitherman, b. 1798, Rutherford Co, TN, d. 1852, Greene Co, IL. He m. (1) Jincey/Jinsey Brown, m. (2) Betsey/Betsy Ally, b. c1801, VA.

1. Littleton Jefferson, b. 1819, TN, d. 1887, Pike Co, IL., m. Mariam Brown, 1839 in Greene Co., IL

2. Thomas L., b. c1822, TN, d. IL, m. Mary E. Mays.
Children: Lydia A., Jesse Jasper Monore, Panola F, John M.

3. James Smitherman, b. 1823, TN, d. 6 Mar 1884, Austin, Cass, MO. He married (1) Ruth "Ruthy" Ann McCurley, 18 Jul 1841, Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL. d/o Joseph McCurley. Ruthy was b. 1822, TN, d. Bef. 1861, Austin, Cass, MO.
He m. (2) Eliza Jackson, 16 May 1861, Austin, Cass, MO.
She was b. 3 Feb 1840 in MO, father KY, mother, Annie, b. VA.

James served in the Mexican War for one year. He enlisted in Alton, IL, 25 Jun 1846, CO. D, Ills, Vols.
Discharged, 17 Jun 1847
Sep & Oct, 1846 he was servant for Lt. Col. Weatherford.

Rebecca Jane, b. 9 May 1842, Macoupin Co, IL. d. 19 Aug 1922, OK. Burial: Douglas, KS.

Rebecca Jane Smitherman, married, Lorenzo Dow Darnall, 10 Sep 1864, Kansas City, MO. He died 7 Feb. 1904.

Mary Elizabeth Smitherman, married, Timothy Reed, 6 Ap 1861. He was b. 6 Apr 1861, in Bates County, MO, or NC, and died 30 Mar 1903.

4. Spencer Smitherman, b. 1825, TN, m. Frances Ann Wilson, Macoupin, IL.

Plus, William, John, Samuel.
