Margie,
You might try looking in Gregg County TX,
Houston County TX, and Bienville Parish
LA, for your lost Smitherman.
One of my very distant cousins, John Haston Smelley m. a Martha Jane "Matt" Smitherman.
She was b.Oct. 5, 1845, Bibb Co.AL. They married Jan.3, 1866 Bibb Co. AL & she d. Feb. 16, 1923, Liberty Hill, Bienville Parish, LA.
In notes sent to me by another Smelley cousin I found the following.
"NOTES: In 1875 , Lucretia Susan Childress Jones Smitherman, mother of Martha Jane (Matt) Smitherman Smelley, her (Lucretia's)son Robert Ganderson Smitherman and her first husband's granddaughter Emma Sideria Jones moved to Liberty Hill, LA. Her other five Smitherman children and their families soon followed. All settled in Liberty Hill except for daughter Elizabeth Ann Smitherman who married and moved to Longview (Gregg County)
Texas. James Smelley and Lucretia were married Dec. 28, 1843"
There are several Smitherman buried in cemeteries in Longview, Gregg County, TX. I don't remember which one either Winterfield or Old Sumerfield or it could be in both.
William Smelly m. a Nancy Smitherman and they moved to Houston County, TX.
This may not be any help to you at all but may offer some leads since the names Martha Jane and Ganderson were mentioned in the notes notes.
Margie B.
