Sylvia I am not exactly certain on who the parents of John Smitherman were, however I am certain that Samuel W Smitherman b. 1789 [father of Newton Weston Smitherman and William Jasper Smitherman who both moved to Pontotoc Co., Ms.] was not his father.
Samuel W did indeed have a son named John Jesse Smitherman who was age 20 in the 1870 US Bibb Co., AL. Census and was still living at home. Samuel and his family were listed in household 242/239 on the 1870. Listed in household 245/242 was Jno Smitherman 29 M, Mary 26 F, Jackson 8 M, Edward 5 M, Alphy 3 F, and Mary 5/12 F.
According to the 1850 US Bibb Co., Al. Census, Jesse Smitherman b. 25 December 1807 had a son JOHN who was listed as age 10. This I believe is going to be your John Smitherman. If you ever get a chance to look at the marriage record of your John Smitherman and his wife Mary you will notice something unusual, Mary was listed as Mary Smitherman and then the Smitherman was scratched out and Latham was written down. I believe that MARY was actually the daughter of KEZIAH SMITHERMAN LATHAM. Rolley Smitherman was given custody of the children of Keziah Smitherman Latham who was his sister.[note both Rolley and Kiziah were half siblings to Newton Weston and William Jasper Smitherman.
Jesse Smitherman b. 1807 whom I believe to be the father of your John Smitherman was from everything I have found, the youngest brother of Samuel W Smitherman b. 1789. If he is not Samuel W's brother then he was the son of Jesse Smitherman who was Samuel W's brother as listed in the estate of Thomas Smitherman Sr. of North Carolina.
I hope I have not totally confused you on this. If you need more information just email me at <davyl@Mindspring.com> and I will try my best to help you.
