They could be brothers, but I have no other information as to his name other than John Smitherman. I have him as being born in 1840 in Alabama. That would make them 7 years apart. I found a marriage record for them (Jan 03, 1861 in Bibb Co., Alabama). Their first five children were born in Alabama. 1. Marion Jackson Fillmore Smitherman was born 3 Nov., 1861 in Alabama 2. Edson S. Smitherman, (male) abt 1866 3. Athea T. Smitherman, (female) 1867 4. Dodie S. Smitherman, (female) 1870 5. Minnie M. Smitherman, (female) 1872 6. William L. Smitherman, (male) 1874, Mississippi 7. Wallis B. or Millie B. Smitherman, Mississippi 8. Marjie Smitherman, 1880, Mississippi On the 1880 Mississippi census, there was a sister of John's living with him, who was born 1838 in Alabama. Newton Weston Smitherman may be the brother to John and Rebecca. There was another John Smitherman in the vacinity of Bibb co., Al at the same time as mine, so it will be tricky to keep them separate. I came accross a Newton Smitherman (married to Lavina)in the 1900 census Mississippi, Pontotoc County, Roll 825 Book 2, Page 122 at Genealogy.com Please let me know if this helps or if you find more.
