Fereby Longcrier was my great aunt. She was sister to my grandmother, Lucy Ann Smitherman, who married William John Ruddick. My great uncle, Henry W. FitzGerald, had brought William John Ruddick from Ireland in May of 1871. Rev. Henry Longcrier and Fereby brought William John Ruddick to Bibb County AL the following year. [Henry FitzGerald had a wholesale mercantile business in Memphis and had interest in the commissaries of J. B. Howison's logging camps] The three were to attend a funeral and convey condolences to the family from Henry FitzGerald. Henry FitzGerald's daughter had married Captain J. B. Howison, brother of the land baron, Major Howison. Checking the Howison and Fitzgerald families, there were no key deaths in 1872.

The Smitherman family, however, was hard hit that year with the following deaths:
Martha Gilly Snider Smitherman, second wife of John D. Smitherman died in 1872, but I find no month and day record;
Jane McDaniel Mahan Smitherman, wife of Thomas Smitherman 1788, died 21 November 1872; and
Thomas Smitherman 1788 died 24 November 1872.

Does anyone have an exact date of death for Martha Gilly Snider Smitherman?

Eddie Ruddick
