Two Smith Families of Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA-1600s/1700s
I see a lot of files on RootsWeb WorldConnect (and elsewhere) that confuse/intermix two Smith families that lived next-door to one another in Middlesex/Lancaster Co., VA.One of those families was headed by Alexander Smith (his wife is unproven, though many claim that she was Mary Cock/Cocke), and the other family was headed by a John Smith who married a Margaret unknown. We do not know at this time if those two Smith families were "blood related" to one another (though they did intermarry).
The James Smith who married Ann Cary was a son of the above John and Margaret (Unknown) Smith.Unlike what many files on the internet show, that James Smith was NOT a son of the John Smith who married the widow Mrs. Jane (Cock/Cocke) Jones. The John Smith who married Jane was a son of Alexander Smith (and that John Smith should not be confused with the son of John and Margaret (Unknown) Smith who was yet another John Smith....who married a Phebe/Phoebe).We have several DNA donors who are out of Alexander Smith, but unfortunately, we do not seem to have any DNA donors at this time who show John and Margaret (Unknown) Smith as their ancestors.
