Robert Thomas Smith escaped WW2!
I am looking for information regarding Robert Thomas Smith born 1917 in Kensington, London. He was Bombardier 976170, 142 (The Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. Killed in action 9th September 1943, aged 27. Son of Samuel and Minny Smith; husband of Kathleen Alice Smith of Georgeham, Devon. No known grave. Commemorated on Cassino Memorial, Italy. Panel 2.
However, years later it was revealed he possibly survived and ended up living in South Africa. A South African solicitor tried contacting his sister many years ago but I don't know what came of it. The surviving brother wasn't too happy because people presumed him dead and he deserted.
I really need help on this one. Would love to find relatives, learn the story.
