Smiley Canyon Namesake--Nebr.?

I'm a writer looking for information about Smiley family members who might have had a canyon in Nebraska named after them. The canyon is Smiley Canyon near Fort Robinson State Park, in Sioux County, Nebraska. It's between the towns of Crawford and Harrison on old Highway 20, which is now called Smiley Canyon Scenic Highway.

I'm writing an information plaque for the canyon, and would like to hear any stories associated with it!

Thanks for your help.
